Have your say about the future of the Scottish Learning Festival

The Scottish Learning Festival (SLF) has been the largest education event in Scotland for the last 12 years.  Each year many thousands of practitioners have attended and benefited from the thought-provoking conference programme, visited the exhibition to see and try the latest resources available and networked with colleagues from across Scotland.

As part of our on-going commitment to SLF, Education Scotland is undertaking a review to ensure that it meets the needs of the education community.

Over the past few months, a number of reference groups have met to consider whether SLF should continue, how it could best support the needs of Scottish education and to propose possible future formats for consideration.

The key findings from these review groups have been analysed and, in a two-step research approach, we have now created an online survey to capture the thoughts of the SLF audience and the wider education community.

This is your opportunity to help shape the future of SLF and your input and contributions are valued and welcome.  Please take time to complete the online survey which is open until Friday 19th April 2013 and will take you up to 10 minutes to complete.

V&A at Dundee Teachers’ Survey

The V&A at Dundee invites primary and secondary school teachers from across Scotland to take part in a survey which will help them shape their education programme for the organisation.

V&A at Dundee’s aim is to offer a programme which will encourage interdisciplinary practice and learning, covering a wide range of Curriculum for Excellence areas.  For example, a session looking at Hollywood Costume might discuss the use of costume design to represent particular faiths and debate issues of potential stereotyping, or how people of different faiths are represented in film genres. A session looking at Green Design would explore moral issues about climate change and sustainability.

GTCS launches revised Professional Standards

A suite of revised Professional Standards for teachers was launched by GTC Scotland this week.

The revised Standards which will replace the current four Standards in August 2013 are:

  • The Standards for Registration (incorporating the Standard for Provisional Registration and the Standard for Full Registration)
  • The Standard for Career-Long Professional Learning
  • The Standards for Leadership and Management (incorporating the Standard for Middle Leadership and the Standard for Headship).

Glow is evolving – March update

Maureen Gore, Education Scotland’s Assistant Director, Emerging Technologies, provides the latest update on the Glow Migration Project

We are delighted that every Glow user across Scotland will have free access to the latest Office365 web application suite including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote and Lync. Everyone can create and share learning and teaching resources which are then easily accessible both at school and at home. These tools will become available as each stakeholder migrates into the new environment.

The National Glow Team are currently working on simple step by step guides on using Glow to enhance learning and teaching. These examples will be based on learner/teacher scenarios setting out the use of the new Glow components, how they could be applied within a learning context to exemplify potential impact upon learning. Join us for a live session of animating in the classroom, creating a character and getting going with Bruce Husband an OOGLIE animator. This animation workshop builds on the paper creativity challenges and is most suitable for first and second level learners.

Maggie’s Design Competition

This Glow Meet gives teachers an opportunity to learn more about the competition and get ideas and support for teaching architecture in the classroom from Stone Opera architect Hanneke Scott-van Wel. There is a great prize for students interested in making architecture a career and an opportunity to have work featured in an exhibition at The Lighthouse.
