SLF 2014 – call for seminar proposals now open

The Call for Participation in the Scottish Learning Festival 2014 is now open and importantly there is a focus on employability skills – including creativity.

The festival will once again host around 100 seminars over the 2 days and you are invited to submit a proposal to be part of the programme. Deadline for receipt of submissions is 28 February. SLF 2014 will take place on Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 September in the SECC, Glasgow.

The Scottish Learning Festival 2014: raising achievement and attainment for all will focus on maximising educational outcomes through:

  • early intervention and prevention – for children, young people and adult learners in order to maximise educational outcomes
  • health and wellbeing – ranging from physical education and sport to the full  range of health and wellbeing subjects which are the responsibility of all  practitioners
  • employability skills – to secure a highly educated, well prepared and well-motivated young workforce able to compete in a global market.

Elements of Creative Scotland’s developing Strategic Plan, 2014-24, are now online for consultation.

Creative Scotland is interested in your thoughts on its shared vision, purpose, ambitions and priorities and whether they resonate with you, as someone working or interested in the arts, screen and creative industries in Scotland; and if they reflect what you see as the role of Creative Scotland.

The online consultation is open for comment until 5pm, Friday 7 February.

Funding

Creative Scotland Funding Update – January 2014

Creative Scotland will be announcing its timetable for launching new funding streams and how to apply in April, alongside the publication of its strategic plan.

Regular funding for organisations

The funding deadline for organisations wishing to be considered for regular funding from April 2015 will be in July 2014. Guidelines will be available from April 2014 and we will be discussing the transition needs of currently funded organisations with them direct, over the coming months.

Project funding

The new project funding programme will open in October 2014 and Creative Scotland is planning to run the following programmes until at least that time (deadlines to be advised shortly):

The final list of programmes will be confirmed once budgets have been approved by the Board in March.

Scottish College for Educational Leadership website launched

The Scottish College for Educational Leadership website is now live at www.scelscotland.org.uk.  The site will be regularly updated over the coming months as developments progress.

As a core part of Teaching Scotland’s Future, the College will support leadership development at all levels for education practitioners across Scotland. The College’s vision is to support teachers and practitioners to make a difference through access to innovative and quality leadership programmes and services.

Join us for this exciting behind the scenes look at puppetery as teachers work with Finn Caldwell who is one of the original War Horse puppeteers. Finn has directed the puppetry for productions of War Horse in the West End and in Australia.  He has also just directed the puppetry in The Light Princess at the National Theatre and is directing a children’s puppetry show called Elephantom in The Shed.

Starcatchers Creative Skills Training

Starcatchers is currently offering a free training programme for Early Years workers in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Fife, South Lanarkshire and Inverclyde as part of a pilot project to develop creative skills for early years workers in Scotland which is being supported by the Scottish Government and Creative Scotland.

The programme will allow early years workers from a range of sectors to build their understanding of the importances of creativity in early years and through a series of artist-led practical sessions, will offer skills and techniques that practitioners can use when they are working with children and families directly.

The 50 Word Fiction Competition – Can you write a story in just 50 words?

Can you write a story in just 50 words? Each month Scottish Book Trust provide a prompt to get you started, but where the story goes from there is entirely up to you. The competition now includes an additional category for Young Writers. This category will include stories by writers under the age of 18. All stories will be judged by the same panel and both winning stories will be published on the Scottish Book Trust website.

An encounter with a museum can be a life-changing experience, a realisation of the past or an inspiration for the future. If you have a poem, short story or reportage inspired by a museum you have visited, tell us and your words could be selected for publication.

2014 is set to be a fantastic year in Perth & Kinross and across Scotland. With the Year of Homecoming, the Commonwealth Games and the Ryder Cup, 2014 will be full of amazing events, activities opportunities and memories. With our website, 120 words, we want to capture a record of 2014 in Perth & Kinross whether you live, work or visit the area.

120 Words 1200 people 12 months We’d like you to get creative and describe what you’ve done, what you’re doing or what you want to do in 120 words, upload it to our website and share it. You can even add a wee photo too! Our website will launch at the end of November 2013 and we’d like as many contributions as we can get. You can submit as many times as you want (in 120 words!) over the year and to help inspire you we’ve created 12 themes for you to write about.

You can upload your contribution to www.our120words.org.uk at the end of November or please fill in the submission form email it to us and we’ll upload it for you. Over the next 12 months we’ll build a picture of 2014, keep checking back to see what’s been posted and what people have been up to.

On 28 November Scotland’s museums are being taken over. Will you be inviting children and young people to be in charge of your museum?

Takeover Day Scotland is a celebration of children and young people’s contribution to museums, galleries and historic homes. It’s a day on which they are given meaningful roles, working alongside staff and volunteers to participate in the life of the museum.
