National Youth Jazz Orchestras of Scotland Auditions

The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland are still accepting applications for auditions taking place early in 2013 for the National Youth Jazz Orchestras of Scotland.

Auditions will take place as follows:

3 Jan – Perth (North Inch Campus)

4 Jan – Aberdeen (Northfield Academy)

5 Jan – Glasgow (Unitarian Church Hall, Berkely Street)

6 Jan – Edinburgh (Broughton High School)

If distance precludes applicants from attending an audition, applications by dvd (or cd/soundcloud/wetransfer) will be considered.

Scottish Government challenge prize fund for young innovators – 18-24 years

The Scottish Government announces the launch of the Young Innovators Challenge which will be open to young people aged 18-24 who are in their final year of college or university, taking part in a national training programme or studying for a Modern Apprenticeship. Industry leaders will set young competitors challenges across a number of specialist fields, judge competition entries and offer mentoring and support to successful entrants.

Opportunity for young people to create their own social enterprise – 11-16 year olds

Live UnLtd, InspirEngage International and Xing Education launched Create Your Career, offering 11–16 year-olds across the UK the opportunity to start their own social enterprise. Successful applicants receive up to £500 kick-start funding, a free place at an InspirEngage Skills Bootcamp and access to support. The deadline for applications is 10 December.

Xpress Yourself – Make a Movie – Edinburgh based 12-19 year olds

Screen Education Edinburgh in partnership with Heart of Midlothian and Hibernian Football Clubs launched Xpress Yourself, film making workshops for 12–19 year-olds, with priority given to those from ‘areas of deprivation’ in the city. Funded by Creative Scotland’s CashBack for Creativity programme, participants are given a taste of the filmmaking process, with the opportunity of receiving ongoing training and support via ‘core filmmaking groups’ based at each club.

Pilot project seeks young designers & journalists

The Matter is a new programme which is aiming to help young people develop skills for work whilst telling the world what they think about important issues.

The project is seeking young people aged 16-24 who live in and around Glasgow, to take part in a pilot which will inform the development of a national programme.

Young people taking part will be designing and writing for a newspaper, raising awareness of issues that are important to them, and helping to change the world!

Spotlight on Theatre – Careers event via Glow

Festival Theatre Edinburgh, The Lyceum Theatre and The Traverse Theatre are holding a unique interactive careers event on Tuesday 11th September. Places to attend have already been booked up but if you are interested in finding out more, and watching the sessions you can now join in on Glow TV.

The event is aimed at 5th and 6th year pupils interested in pursuing a career in the theatre, and will also act as a CPD session for Drama, Guidance/Support Teachers and Career’s Advisors. In addition pupils in upper primary and lower primary may be interested in many aspects of the day.

It is a busy day with lots to join in with:

Directing and Writing for Theatre live from The Traverse Theatre – 10 – 11.30am
As Scotland’s New Writing Theatre the Traverse prides itself on the close relationships they have with our writers. Join our Associate Director for a practical workshop that explores the relationship and journey of a playwright and director.

An introduction to careers in arts administration, focusing on marketing, press, PR and programming. Money for Life Challenge

The Money for Life Challenge offers young people (aged 16-24) the opportunity to develop a money management/financial information themed project which will have an impact in their community.

This presents an excellent opportunity for encouraging young people to take ownership of their learning, to develop their confidence and make an effective contribution.

There are Scottish prizes to be won as well as UK National prizes, all awarded at inspirational events.

Portfolio Guidance for Aspiring Art Students

Artist and lecturer Julie Read has launched a new website, www.portfolio-oomph.com , specifically designed to support young people who wish to apply to art college. The site includes advice and guidance on portfolio preparation, video interviews with artists, designers and makers, and links to information on possible careers in the creative industries.

Also available is a range of e-books which provide in-depth guidance on subjects such as how to present work, how to choose the right subject and college and how to do well at interview. e-books cost between £2.50 and £10.95 and a range of e-courses is promised soon.

Funds for young people to develop their creativity

Creative Enterprise Fund

Creative Scotland and Young Scot see the Creative Enterprise Fund as providing a means for Scotland’s young people to develop their artistic talent and unlock opportunities within the creative industries. The Fund aims to promote the values of creative enterprise and leadership, creating positive pathways to employment and providing wider benefits to local communities.

The Fund can offer awards of up to £200 for individuals aged 15-22 or £750 for groups of three or more young people, where two thirds of any group are aged between 15-22.

The deadline for applications is 17 September 2012.

Young Start Fund

A new fund aimed at unlocking the potential of Scotland’s children and young people has been launched by the Big Lottery Fund. Young Start will invest dormant accounts money in projects that encourage young Scots aged 8 to 24 to be:

  • CONFIDENT – Children and young people have more confidence and skills;
  • HEALTHY – Children and young people have better physical, mental and emotional health;
  • CONNECTED – Younger and older generations are better connected and have more understanding and respect for each other;
  • ENTERPRISING – Young people are better prepared for getting a job or starting a business.

Young Start, which is forecast to invest £8.9 million by March 2013, will award grants of between £10,000 and £50,000 for up to two years. The fund is aimed at third sector organisations including voluntary organisations, community groups, social enterprises, housing associations, sports organisations, cooperatives and charities.

Projects will have a better chance of success if they can show young people have been meaningfully involved in the development, design and delivery of the project. Young Start can fund a range of projects including the following examples:

  • Using local artists in a creative arts project to improve young people’s confidence;
  • Getting young people involved in sport through the use of local sports facilities;
  • Young people teaching older people how to use technology and try new activities such as using the internet, social networking and gaming;
  • Work experience tasters with local employers.

Application form and guidance materials are available online here. There are no deadlines and applications can be submitted at any time. Applicants will hear if they have been successful within 8 weeks of submitting an application form.
