Roma Agrawal, an Associate Structural Engineer at WSP, will be talking to students about her career and her role in designing bridges, skyscrapers and sculptures with signature architects over her eight year career. She will then take questions from the students in the studio and logged in on Glow TV. Roma Agrawal is being interviewed to encourage students to engage with The Leaders Award for STEM. inGenious competition brings STEM classes to life

A new competition has been launched to inspire the most creative teaching minds to translate their passion for science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects into exciting classroom experiences.

The inGenious competition – co-ordinated in the UK by Futurelab at NFER – calls for all teachers in Europe to help their pupils better see the link between their passions, the set of skills which make them possible, and the education paths leading to those skills.

The inGenious competition is open to all teachers at primary and secondary school level. Applications are open until 28 February 2014, and 30 finalists will be invited to attend the inGenious European Award Ceremony in Brussels later in the year.

Glow Meet with the Queen’s Baton Designer

In November two exciting Glow Meets around Technologies’ will focus on the Queen’s Baton and its design. Join us on Tuesday 5 November (4.00-4.45 pm) to learn more about how William Mitchell and his design team  at 4cDesign effectively utilised science, technology, engineering, maths, art and design skills to create the Queen’s Baton and how you and your learners can be involved on 26 November (10.00 – 11.00 am) by considering your own baton design for your school or centre.

Game on Scotland – official education programme of 2014 launched

Game on Scotland is the official education programme of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and its legacy. It aims to provide inspiration and learning and teaching opportunities related to Glasgow 2014 and other momentous events happening throughout Scotland in the coming years.

The Programme uses the Games as a context for learning, allowing for the delivery of many experiences and outcomes within CfE and providing opportunities for the development of skills for learning, life and work.

Game On Scotland aims to support teachers, school leaders and education managers in creating stimulating learning experiences for young people from 3-18 using the Commonwealth Games as a context for learning.

The Game On Scotland website hosts a wealth of learning and teaching resources, interactive media and background information on the Games; it aims to help practitioners:

  • create stimulating learning experiences
  • develop learners’ skills and knowledge across the curriculum
  • find and share learning and teaching ideas across a global network
  • get involved in a variety of Games-based education projects
  • explore opportunities to connect with learners, practitioners and schools across the globe.

Fuselab – an immersive learning experience for 16-20 year olds

Fuselab is an out of this world experience for 16-20 year olds at Edinburgh’s
Summerhall in which they’ll plan the future of an uninhabited world.

Fuselab is looking for 80 innovative and creative minds – scientists, artists and
engineers – to help develop a sustainable way of life, free from the
constraints of the systems and structures we live by here on Earth.

Participants will be asked to challenge their thinking through workshops, skills sessions, talks and games; collaborating to design, prototype and test ideas.

Applications for both sessions close on Wednesday 8 May.

40 participants will be selected per session.

These free-to-access teaching materials relate content to everyday life and real-world challenges in areas such as: Pharmaceutical; Air quality; Lifestyle; Scarce natural resources; Agricultural productivity; Energy

Free-text search, intuitive navigation and filters allow quick and easy access to a wide range of chemistry resources – including experiments, worksheets, videos, simulations, and games – at home or in the classroom.

Created for use with pupils at varying levels of ability, materials are designed to encourage students to approach challenges through problem solving and analytical thinking.

Funding for science programme

The Scottish Government has announced that a national programme of science events and exhibitions will take place across the country to celebrate the Year of Natural Scotland. The activity will take place in Scotland’s four science centres in 2013.

Full programme details are still to be announced but highlights are set to include:
·         A series of community and school events celebrating sustainable living and new technologies at Dundee Science Centre.
·         A festival focusing on sustainable science at Glasgow Science Centre, with hands-on workshops and ‘meet the expert’ sessions.
·         Workshops and exhibitions at Our Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh celebrating the beauty of Scotland’s natural environment.
·         A ‘Green Energy Discovery Weekend’ and a symposium for primary pupils at Aberdeen’s Satrosphere Science Centre.

Junior Saltire Prize 2013 – designing for renewable energy

To help to raise awareness amongst young people of the exciting developments and opportunities of marine renewables in Scotland for the third successive year the Junior Saltire Award for primary and secondary school pupils is being organised.  The competition is managed by Skills Development Scotland (SDS) in partnership with the Scottish Government and SCDI’s Young Engineers and Science Clubs Scotland.

This award is open to all primary P5-P7 and secondary S1-S3 and S4-S6 pupils in Scotland. Working in teams of up to four, pupils will design and build a model marine energy device to operate under test conditions. Schools can submit multiple entries provided each is registered separately. Deadline for registration: 21 December 2012.
