Earlston High School Eco Garden

We are now into November and have been busy preparing the garden for winter. Most of the vegetables have been lifted and used either in the Home Economics department or Pupil Support kitchen. We still have leeks, brussel sprouts, chard and parsley in the garden.

School students have been busy winter digging the garden and putting dung in ready for next year’s planting. The Borders College students are preparing a paved area for raised beds allowing access to the garden for all students.

We are very excited about receiving the grant so that we can buy our polytunnel, get a water in the garden and purchase our Ipads so that we can share and record the students’ learning experiences with the school and the wider community.

Growing Global Food Citizens is a 5-day continuing professional development course for teachers.
Edinburgh City Council and Eco-Schools Scotland, together with Whitmuir Organics and six Edinburgh primary schools – Craigour Park, Carrick Knowe, St John’s, Davidson Mains, Gracemount and Murrayburn – successfully submitted a collaborative bid to the Food for Thought Education Fund 2013-14.
The Food for Thought funding award enables:
• Eco-Schools Scotland to facilitate the development of a professional learning community to share good practice and collaborative learning.
• Whitmuir Organics, a working organic farm with on-site butchery, kitchen, restaurant and shop, to design, write and deliver a 5-day course to 12 teachers (2 from each school) to increase their knowledge and confidence in identifying and understanding sustainable food systems.
• Each of the 6 schools to undertake practical projects in their own schools.
The first 5-day course is scheduled to run on: 12 November and 3 December 2013, 14 January, 11 February and 18 March 2014.

Fruit and Vegetable Barra Launch at Drumbowie Primary!

The launch of our Fruit and Veg Barra was very successful with such great support from family, friends and the local community that we sold out of all of our fruit and vegetables!

We also managed to give everyone a scare with our Halloween theme through pupils’ fancy dress, a tasting station of pumpkin soup made by the pupils and a flash mob to ‘Thriller’!

Hopefully our next stall at the end of November will continue this success!
