Tulliallan Primary Parent Master-classes

The Primary 7 children have been developing a range of food preparation skills since we got our new café up and running and they decided to put these skills to good use last week! The class invited their parents and grandparents into the school to receive a cooking lesson.

We were delighted to see lots of parents and some grandparents coming into our kitchen and café and being taught how to make a healthy pizza by their children.

The children used and demonstrated a range of food preparation skills such as chopping and grating and took responsibility for setting up their workstations and ensuring that everything was safely and hygienically put away afterwards.

The pizzas were delicious and lots of the parents and children said they were going to make their own healthy pizzas at home for the rest of the family. A great success for the Primary 7 children!

Tulliallan’s Commonwealth Fair

Since August pupils from Nursery to Primary 7 have all been learning more about various things linked to the Commonwealth. As well as finding out about some of the foods eaten across the Commonwealth, we have also been exploring other things that keep us happy and healthy such as the values and rights that the Commonwealth aims to achieve for all its citizens.

We have linked our work on the food eaten in some Commonwealth countries to the wider culture of these countries and have enjoyed learning about music, art, geography and traditions, amongst other things.

In March we decided to hold a Commonwealth Fair for our parents, carers and grandparents. This was to celebrate Commonwealth day and it provided us with a fantastic opportunity to share our learning with our families.

We had a range of stalls selling things like:

* Placemats we made using art inspired by countries like Malawi and Kenya.
* Australian biscuits
* Indian Curried Rice Salad
* Canvas bags decorated in the colours of Commonwealth countries
* Grow-your-own herbs in recycled mugs that could be used to cook recipes from the Commonwealth.

The day was great fun.

Tulliallan Primary – developing skills for life!

Our new kitchen area is now fully stocked and we are using it more and more.

Here are some of our SNAC (School Nutritional Advisory Council) reps setting everything up.  They have taken responsibility for deciding upon the layout of the kitchen and for making sure that all of our new equipment is safely and conveniently stored for our use.

So far we have been lucky to have several organisations come into School to help us learn new skills that we can use in school and at home.

Chefs from Fife College came  in to run Masterclasses where we got to prepare healthy wraps.  We learned that the more colourful the mix of food the better as this means a wider range of nutrients, we also tried new food combinations.  The wraps we made were absolutely delicious and so easy to do that some of us have made them at home for our families!

We have also had Meat Demonstrations where we learned about quality Scottish meat and made food using Scottish beef.

We are all really excited about the learning experiences we have had so far and are looking forward to lots more opportunities to use our kitchen and café next term!

Tulliallan Sustainability Event

On Friday 8th November 2013, the Primary 7 class from Tulliallan Primary hosted a Sustainability Event to which they invited all classes and also parents and carers.

The event was an opportunity for the children to share their learning about Climate Change and sustainability.  Prior to the event, Primary 7 spent lots of time in class learning about the causes and impact of climate change.  They also worked with Primary 5 to learn more about Food Miles, the impact these have on the environment and about local, in-season produce.  This work was then developed further with P7 carrying out Maths activities to investigate the food miles of various recipes, sharing their learning with Primary 3 and then buddying up with Primary 3 to bake using local produce.

The end result was a Café area that served the food created by P3 and P7 and a trade show in the Primary 7 classroom to highlight the benefits of reusing food packaging waste.

Watch our movie, Review of Learning, to find out more and to hear what we learned from this event!

Earlston High School Eco Garden

We are now into November and have been busy preparing the garden for winter. Most of the vegetables have been lifted and used either in the Home Economics department or Pupil Support kitchen. We still have leeks, brussel sprouts, chard and parsley in the garden.

School students have been busy winter digging the garden and putting dung in ready for next year’s planting. The Borders College students are preparing a paved area for raised beds allowing access to the garden for all students.

We are very excited about receiving the grant so that we can buy our polytunnel, get a water in the garden and purchase our Ipads so that we can share and record the students’ learning experiences with the school and the wider community.
