FOOD FOR THOUGHT

EVENTS AT ANDOVER

Andover Primary was successful in applying for a bid from Food for Thought in September 2013.  This meant we had a grant of £5000 to support the development of food education and an understanding of the provenance of local food as well as developing additional links with the community.

A link was developed with a Nutritionist at Robert Gordon’s University and several community events were planned at which pupils, mainly those attending the School Cooking Club, could showcase their skills.

The first event was a Harvest Meal in October.  This was sourced, with support from Brechin Community Council, from many local producers. The menu was selected following a competition for Scottish dishes organised within the Brechin cluster. The winning dishes were prepared by the children in school.

Prior to the meal every child in Andover (a big school) visited a local producer and did follow up activities. This was funded through the project and organised with the help of Carol Littlewood from RHET. Visits included a dairy farm, smoking house, strawberry farm, poultry farm, an arable farm as well as the co-operative farm in Blairgowrie.

Over one hundred guests attended the supper.

This month a Scottish Event is being hosted. Not only will guests enjoy a three course Scottish meal, but entertainment including music and poetry.

All pupils now have a much greater understanding of where our food is grown and its journey.  The Cooking Club pupils in particular have a very good knowledge, understanding and practical experience of basic cooking skills including using a knife correctly, the importance of a varied diet, including fruit, eating together, manners and basic food hygiene.

Many of the Health and wellbeing outcomes have been achieved and everyone has had a lot of fun and enjoyment.

Food For Thought at Biggar High School

22 January 2014: SBC Programme Coordinator Vivian Maeda was at Biggar High School in South Lanarkshire on Monday to facilitate a food packaging workshop in conjunction with ESC Packaging and Parkers Packaging. The workshop is part of the Scottish Government’s Food For Thought programme which aims to

improve food education in schools across Scotland by running a variety of engaging and creative projects. Scottish Business in the Community’s role in this programme is to help schools find volunteers from businesses to enhance pupils’ learning and experience.

At the workshop, Carri Walker (ESC Packaging) and Michelle Nugent (Parkers Packaging) explained to pupils what was involved in designing a new ready meal packaging for the local butcher ‘Damn Delicious’. After learning more from the experts in the field, the children will attempt to design their own packaging for the ready meal and will be assessed on a variety of criteria including creativity, feasibility and costs including production and marketing. The winners will be announced in mid-February 2014.

A hugely successful and stimulating event, Carri and Michelle also addressed the importance of understanding a client’s brief, the colour psychology used in targeting specific customers as well as issues of branding. Finally, the importance of including the nutritional value, weight, logos and dietary information warnings was addressed.

This is just one of many creative applications of Food for Thought within schools. Working with local businesses provides a practical and multidisciplinary angle to food education. From a school “bake-off” with professional chefs judging, to a school running its own Farmers’ Market with local businesses, to a mock “Dragons’ Den” within the school where managers and chefs from different companies judge the feasibility of a mock range of healthy snacks – the applications are diverse.

If your business is interested in being involved in our Food For Thought programme then please e-mail Vivian Maeda or call 0131 451 1113.

Yell Aquaculture – Burravoe and Cullivoe Primary Schools

Burravoe and Cullivoe Primary Schools on Yell, Shetland, are just starting their joint project learning about the importance of fish in a healthy diet. Aquaculture is an important part of life on Yell and we are lucky to have several local businesses who are going to help us find out about fish and shellfish. We are planning to share what we learn with members of the community and are using ICT to share more widely. The two schools are 20 miles apart and whilst we have planned to share some visits we have also created a Glow Group for us to use for sharing resources and for virtual collaboration; we are learning about the new tools in Glow that will help us work together. We are using most of our funding to pay supply cover so that staff can have time to plan and reflect both together and with other partners and also for transport so that we can visit various industry sites around the island.

We are planning to use animation as one way to share learning. This is an animation made by a P1 who is learning how to animate.
