Food For Thought at Biggar High School

22 January 2014: SBC Programme Coordinator Vivian Maeda was at Biggar High School in South Lanarkshire on Monday to facilitate a food packaging workshop in conjunction with ESC Packaging and Parkers Packaging. The workshop is part of the Scottish Government’s Food For Thought programme which aims to

improve food education in schools across Scotland by running a variety of engaging and creative projects. Scottish Business in the Community’s role in this programme is to help schools find volunteers from businesses to enhance pupils’ learning and experience.

At the workshop, Carri Walker (ESC Packaging) and Michelle Nugent (Parkers Packaging) explained to pupils what was involved in designing a new ready meal packaging for the local butcher ‘Damn Delicious’. After learning more from the experts in the field, the children will attempt to design their own packaging for the ready meal and will be assessed on a variety of criteria including creativity, feasibility and costs including production and marketing. The winners will be announced in mid-February 2014.

A hugely successful and stimulating event, Carri and Michelle also addressed the importance of understanding a client’s brief, the colour psychology used in targeting specific customers as well as issues of branding. Finally, the importance of including the nutritional value, weight, logos and dietary information warnings was addressed.

This is just one of many creative applications of Food for Thought within schools. Working with local businesses provides a practical and multidisciplinary angle to food education. From a school “bake-off” with professional chefs judging, to a school running its own Farmers’ Market with local businesses, to a mock “Dragons’ Den” within the school where managers and chefs from different companies judge the feasibility of a mock range of healthy snacks – the applications are diverse.

If your business is interested in being involved in our Food For Thought programme then please e-mail Vivian Maeda or call 0131 451 1113.

Exciting News at Earlston High School Eco Garden

Students have already started planting in our new polytunnel.

Great excitement at Earlston ….our new ipads have arrived and have already been put to good use. The have been used to great effect in the Home Economics department recording students amazing culinary efforts and as a source of recipes and videos of techniques. They have also recorded the much anticipated arrival of our eco garden poly tunnel which is now ready for planting!!

Tulliallan Primary – developing skills for life!

Our new kitchen area is now fully stocked and we are using it more and more.

Here are some of our SNAC (School Nutritional Advisory Council) reps setting everything up.  They have taken responsibility for deciding upon the layout of the kitchen and for making sure that all of our new equipment is safely and conveniently stored for our use.

So far we have been lucky to have several organisations come into School to help us learn new skills that we can use in school and at home.

Chefs from Fife College came  in to run Masterclasses where we got to prepare healthy wraps.  We learned that the more colourful the mix of food the better as this means a wider range of nutrients, we also tried new food combinations.  The wraps we made were absolutely delicious and so easy to do that some of us have made them at home for our families!

We have also had Meat Demonstrations where we learned about quality Scottish meat and made food using Scottish beef.

We are all really excited about the learning experiences we have had so far and are looking forward to lots more opportunities to use our kitchen and café next term!

Yell Aquaculture – working with NHS Shetland

Nicola Balfour from NHS Shetland’s  Health Promotion Unit has been to talk to children from both schools about the importance of fish and shellfish as part of a healthy diet. She reminded us about the ” Healthy Plate” and then talked to us about how fish can help the different parts of our body. We learned about how much eating oily fish can help our brains, our eyes and our joints. She also told us that fish has collagen in it so we should eat fish and not need expensive face creams!

Nicola left us with some great healthy eating recipe books to take home and share with our families.

Yell Aquaculture – Business Partners

We are very lucky to have some very enthusiastic and supportive business partners to help us with our project. We have been able to have a meeting where we all got together to plan visits to their workplaces and for them to visit us. We are able to use some of our grant to pay the transport costs for all the pupils of both schools to visit a local mussel farm and a well boat whose home port is on the island.

FUNDING HAS ARRIVED!!!!

Our grant money has now come through and we have  ordered a polytunnel for our eco-garden. It  should arrive mid March and this will allow us to plant seeds early for this year’s harvest. We have also been working with students from Borders College who have completed a paved area allowing access for all to our raised beds. Watch this space for more information as the garden progresses towards Spring and Summer. I-pads have also been ordered and these will allow us to record all our garden activities in detail!

Yell Aquaculture – Burravoe and Cullivoe Primary Schools

Burravoe and Cullivoe Primary Schools on Yell, Shetland, are just starting their joint project learning about the importance of fish in a healthy diet. Aquaculture is an important part of life on Yell and we are lucky to have several local businesses who are going to help us find out about fish and shellfish. We are planning to share what we learn with members of the community and are using ICT to share more widely. The two schools are 20 miles apart and whilst we have planned to share some visits we have also created a Glow Group for us to use for sharing resources and for virtual collaboration; we are learning about the new tools in Glow that will help us work together. We are using most of our funding to pay supply cover so that staff can have time to plan and reflect both together and with other partners and also for transport so that we can visit various industry sites around the island.

We are planning to use animation as one way to share learning. This is an animation made by a P1 who is learning how to animate.

Tulliallan Sustainability Event

On Friday 8th November 2013, the Primary 7 class from Tulliallan Primary hosted a Sustainability Event to which they invited all classes and also parents and carers.

The event was an opportunity for the children to share their learning about Climate Change and sustainability.  Prior to the event, Primary 7 spent lots of time in class learning about the causes and impact of climate change.  They also worked with Primary 5 to learn more about Food Miles, the impact these have on the environment and about local, in-season produce.  This work was then developed further with P7 carrying out Maths activities to investigate the food miles of various recipes, sharing their learning with Primary 3 and then buddying up with Primary 3 to bake using local produce.

The end result was a Café area that served the food created by P3 and P7 and a trade show in the Primary 7 classroom to highlight the benefits of reusing food packaging waste.

Watch our movie, Review of Learning, to find out more and to hear what we learned from this event!
