This term in P6/7 our context is SUSTAINABILITY. The whole of St. Albert’s has this context in Term 1.
In P6/7 we will be looking at the Future of Energy: how the world needs to move away from fossil fuels to renewable energy. This topic will be central to our reading and writing this term as well as to our science work. Mrs Brightman has organised two trips as part of our topic: the P6s will be visiting Whitelee Windfarm whilst the P7s will be going to visit EDF Energy’s Nuclear Power Station, Hunterston B.
Literacy and Languages
The skills we are developing this term in reading are to read with expression and to be able to understand more technical information by using dictionaries and asking questions. We read every morning for half an hour and carry our reading tasks in groups. Mrs Brightman reads with each group once a week as a focused lesson.
In speaking and listening, we are learning to understand information and present it back as a talk to our classmates. We’ll be doing this to learn about new energy sources. We’ll also be learning the vocabulary of debate – how to disagree politely and how to persuade others of our point of view.
In our writing, we’ll be learning to write persuasive texts to show our opinion. We’ll be using evidence in our writing to show our reader that our opinion is worth considering.
We’ll also be having French lessons with Mrs Brightman (who studied French as her undergraduate degree!) to extend our vocabulary and start learning grammar to build sentences!
Numeracy
Every term, we ensure that we are still on top of our calculation skills. We’ll be making sure that everyone can use decimals and do long multiplication. In mental maths, we’ll be revising our strategies and applying our knowledge of shape to simple problems.
Health and Wellbeing
In gym, we’re learning to defend in team games by marking our opponents and moving into space to help our team attack. We’re also improving our fitness by doing 15 minutes of exercise every day even when we don’t have P.E.
During our wider health and wellbeing lessons, we’ll be covering three units of work with Miss Cohen, Mrs Brightman and Miss McCue. These will cover: substance misuse awareness; sugar and how it’s hidden in foods; and being able to trust information we find on the internet.
Arts
Mrs Brightman is teaching us about rhythm in music. We’re learning to clap simple rhythms written in quavers and crotchets and to use these rhythms to create body percussion! We might even get the samba drums out!
In our art lessons, we’re learning some drawing techniques to help us to sketch.
Science
Miss Brooks will be teaching us on Thursdays every two weeks as usual.
Technology
This term, we’re going to learn to cook some healthy meals in small groups. We’ll also be using the school’s computing equipment to maintain this class website, for research and for learning how to type effectively.
