Sports Leadership Award

Sports Leadership Award – Ski Trip Pathway (SCQF Level 5)

Global Kapap Sports Leadership

We are delighted to offer returning pupils the opportunity to work towards a Sports Leadership Award at SCQF Level 5 alongside our Italy Ski Trip to Bardonecchia.

This award recognises pupils who take on additional responsibility, support others, and demonstrate leadership through sport and physical activity. It provides a clear progression route for pupils who have previously attended the ski trip and are ready to step into a more active leadership role.

What is the SCQF Level 5 Sports Leadership Award?

The SCQF Level 5 Sports Leadership Award is a nationally recognised qualification designed for pupils aged 15–16. It focuses on developing:

  • confidence and communication skills
  • leadership and teamwork
  • organisation and responsibility
  • problem-solving and adaptability
  • the ability to plan, lead and review physical activities

The award is practical and evidence-based – there are no written exams. Pupils achieve the qualification by planning, leading and evaluating real leadership activities.

Who is this for?

This pathway is open to:

  • pupils who have already attended the ski trip previously
  • pupils who will be 15–16 years old at the time of the trip
  • pupils who wish to take on additional responsibility and act as positive role models

Places are limited and pupils may be asked to complete a short application to ensure they are ready for the leadership role.

What does Sports Leadership look like on the ski trip?

Sports Leaders are not instructors and are not responsible for technical skiing or safety decisions. Instead, they act as peer leaders, supporting staff and younger pupils.

Leadership opportunities include:

Before the trip

  • supporting information sessions and briefings for first-time skiers
  • helping deliver kit talks and preparation guidance
  • leading simple warm-ups or confidence-building activities
  • planning group activities for the journey and evenings

During the trip

  • supporting beginner and nervous skiers
  • helping organise transitions (hotel, slopes, meals)
  • leading warm-ups and cool-downs
  • acting as positive role models for behaviour and attitude

Evening and social leadership

Organising and leading activities such as:

  • quizzes and team challenges
  • low-energy games and icebreakers
  • wellbeing, stretching or recovery activities

Travel leadership

  • planning and leading appropriate games and activities on the bus journey
  • helping maintain positive behaviour and group morale during travel

All activities are planned in advance and approved by staff.

How is the award assessed?

Pupils will gather evidence across the year, including:

  • activity planning sheets
  • leadership logs and reflections
  • staff observation records
  • feedback from pupils and peers

Assessment is ongoing and supportive, focusing on growth, responsibility and leadership, rather than performance or ability.

When does this take place?

Leadership development takes place between February and December, leading up to and including the ski trip.

Pupils will:

  • attend leadership briefings
  • help plan activities across the year
  • take on formal leadership roles during the trip
  • complete a final reflection after returning

Why take part?

By completing the Sports Leadership Award, pupils will:

  • gain a nationally recognised qualification
  • develop valuable life and employability skills
  • contribute positively to the ski trip experience for others
  • demonstrate commitment, responsibility and maturity

This pathway rewards experience and progression while enhancing the overall quality of the trip.
