Active Schools Nightmare Games 2.0

HYROX/functional fitness is considered one of the fastest-growing sports globally. It combines running with functional workouts, appealing to fitness enthusiasts looking for a challenging competition. The unique format, which includes a series of exercises interspersed with running, attracts a diverse range of participants, from elite athletes to everyday fitness lovers. Its growth has been bolstered by increasing awareness through events, social media, and the rising trend of functional fitness, making it a popular choice for people across the globe.

In November 2024, we organised our first-ever schools Hyrox/fitness competition as a trial run, involving primarily schools from the northeast. The event featured pairs of boys and girls competing in a fitness workout against other schools.

Below is the competition workout which was sponsored buy local fitness equipment company Factory weights whom have been giving so much back to the community and are continuing their support for our comps and equipment deals.

Building on the success of this event, we are expanding our efforts and have booked a city-wide competition for S4-S6 young people in November. Our goal is to coordinate an 8-10 week training block after the summer to prepare the participants for the event. We have reached out to local gyms across the city that are eager to collaborate with schools. Some gyms are willing to come into schools to deliver a program, while others have offered space at their facilities. This will be arranged on a school-by-school basis, as there are many teachers in the city actively involved in functional fitness and Hyrox who are enthusiastic about helping to run clubs.

Additionally, we hope to conduct a CPD session for teaching staff focused on functional fitness and Hyrox-style curricular sessions in schools. This will include training on how to run a mini-games environment within a physical education class or extra-curricular club.

Locally gyms have been contacted across the city who are keen to work closer with schools. Some are happy to go into schools to delivers a programme and some have offered space at their gym. This will be on a school by school basis are there seems to be many teachers in the city that are actively involved in functional fitness & hyrox who are keen to help run clubs.
