The Playground Buddies Programme is the first stage of the PEPASS leadership pathway, providing primary pupils with the opportunity to develop leadership skills through sport, play and positive role modelling. For over 20 years, the programme has supported schools across Glasgow in creating more active, inclusive and enjoyable playground environments.
Through a structured five-lesson training programme, pupils learn how to:
- Work effectively as part of a team
- Communicate and lead confidently
- Organise and deliver playground games
- Support younger pupils during play
- Encourage inclusion, fairness and physical activity
- Respond positively to common playground situations and challenges
- Take responsibility and act as positive role models within their school community
The programme combines practical activities, team-building challenges, leadership training and real-life playground scenarios. Buddies develop important skills such as communication, confidence, problem-solving, organisation and collaboration, while gaining experience of planning and delivering games to their peers and younger pupils.
A key feature of the programme is its focus on developing transferable skills for learning, life and work. It links directly to the Curriculum for Excellence, Health and Wellbeing outcomes, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and Developing the Young Workforce Career Education Standards
By becoming Playground Buddies, pupils help create a safer, more welcoming and active playground while building the confidence, knowledge and leadership qualities that will support them throughout their school journey and beyond.
