The Primary Schools Athletics Championships has been held annually for more than 20 years, bringing schools together each summer term to compete in a range of athletics events. On average, around 24 schools participate each year. Details of the event format can be found below, along with a video showcasing the 2026 Championships.
Event rules:
• There are 4 categories in each event, i.e. P7 Boys, P7 Girls, P6 Boys & P6 Girls.
• A school can only be represented by 1 pupil per category in each event (except for the Relay teams which will consist of all 4 pupils who have represented the school in each individual event/category).
• This means each pupil can only enter a maximum of one individual event plus a relay, e.g. 1 pupil cannot participate in 100m sprint + Cricket ball throw + Relay. They can represent the school in 100m sprint + Relay OR Cricket Ball Throw + Relay.
• All members of the Relay team must have participated in one other event in their respective categories. NO EXTRA RUNNERS/TEAM MEMBERS.
• This means school teams are capped at a maximum of 16 athletes, i.e. 4 P7 Boys, 4 P7 Girls, 4 P6 Boys & 4 P6 Girls.
• Ideally, your school will be represented in each category in every event. However, this is not essential. If, for whatever reason, your school cannot participate in a specific event, you can still participate in the day. It will however impact your school’s participation in the Relay race.
• Long jump has NO run up.
• Spike shoes are NOT ALLOWED.
• All events on the day (especially Finals) are subject to time available. Should the event be running overtime, results will be decided on race times from Heats. This will be communicated as the event progresses on the day.
