The Role of a Modern Apprentice

The PEPASS Modern Apprentice Programme has been running successfully since 2019. It has a clear vision – to upskill the young people involved, increase their employability and prepare them for future positive destinations. Modern Apprentices stay with the team for almost two years. After an initial induction process, they are deployed across the city with an Active Schools mentor to learn on the job and help contribute to the team’s key priorities.

What is a PEPASS Modern Apprenticeship?

A 22 month paid Modern Apprenticeship that:

  • Provides opportunities for young people engaged in sports leadership skills who are not in higher education, taking up employment or in training
  • Provides young people with the learning, qualifications and vocational training required by employers
  • Inspires young people to engage in sports leadership roles
  • Enables young people to reach their full potential

Day to day, MAs deliver in their cluster schools, supporting our leadership programmes and at out of school hours physical activity and sport clubs at breakfast, lunchtime and afterschool. They are also tasked with organising their own PEPASS projects as well as organising and assisting in the delivery of area and city wide PEPASS events, such as the Glasgow Schools’ Gymfest, Triathalon, Super 7s Athletics and City of Dance Finals. The Modern Apprentices contribute greatly to the Health and Wellbeing of pupils across the city.

Modern Apprentices will gain an apprenticeship in Sport, Active Leisure and Physical Activity, Level 2 SVQ (SCQF Level 6). They also complete mandatory enhancements to support their core learning and development and we offer a great variety of opportunities to help broaden Apprentices’ horizons and develop multiple skills both on the job and through our additional training programme. The Apprenticeship fully supports our young people to move on to positive destinations, offering the practical help and advice needed to navigate their next steps.

Providing a high quality service for our schools and pupils is at the heart of the PEPASS agenda and we work with partners to increase and promote opportunities that change lives through sport and physical activity. The MA programme is supported in partnership with Glasgow City Council, Glasgow Life and Sportscotland.
