A Child Protection Coordinator is a member of the school leadership team who has a specific responsibility for overseeing child protection and safeguarding matters. Their role is to ensure that any concerns about a child’s well-being are handled appropriately, sensitively, and in line with national guidance and local authority procedures.

This does not mean that parents or children should be worried. Rather, it is an important part of creating a safe and supportive environment where all children can learn and thrive.

The Child Protection Coordinators responsibilities include:

• Supporting staff to recognise and respond to well-being concerns.
• Acting as a point of contact for child protection matters.
• Working closely with families and partner agencies when support is needed.
• Ensuring that the school follows Scottish safeguarding and child protection guidance.
• Maintaining confidential records and ensuring concerns are handled appropriately.

All staff have a responsibility to promote children’s well-being, but the Designated Manager provides leadership and guidance when concerns arise.

We believe that strong partnerships between home and school are essential. Whenever possible and appropriate, we aim to work openly with parents and carers to ensure children receive the support they need. However, there may be occasions when the school has a duty to share concerns with other agencies to ensure a child’s safety and well-being.

In every Glasgow school, a senior member of staff is identified as the Designated Manager for Care Experienced Children and Young People. This role reflects Glasgow City Council’s commitment to ensuring that children and young people who are care experienced have the support, opportunities and encouragement they need to achieve their full potential. 

The Designated Manager acts as a key point of contact within the school and maintains an overview of each care experienced learner’s wellbeing, progress and educational planning. They work closely with children and young people, families, carers, social workers and other professionals to ensure that the right support is in place at the right time.

Key responsibilities include:

• Promoting high aspirations and positive outcomes for care experienced learners.
• Ensuring that each learner’s educational needs, wellbeing and support requirements are identified and regularly reviewed.
• Coordinating planning and support across school and partner agencies to help remove barriers to learning and participation.
• Monitoring attendance, attainment, achievement and engagement, and supporting early intervention where concerns arise.
• Acting as a point of contact for carers, families and professionals involved in supporting the child or young person.
• Ensuring that the school’s practice reflects national guidance, corporate parenting responsibilities and the principles of The Promise, helping care experienced learners feel valued, included, safe and supported.

At its heart, the role of the Designated Manager is to ensure that every care experienced child and young person is known, understood and championed within the school community, enabling them to thrive both academically and personally.
