Starting Nursery and Deferring Entry to Primary

Admissions Policy

All nursery places are allocated in line with the Council’s admissions policy. The nursery staff will be happy to advise you how this policy works when you apply for a place for your child. A leaflet detailing the policy is available from all establishments. If you want a copy, please ask for one.
An admissions panel meets at regular intervals throughout the year to decide how nursery places will be allocated. The panel consists of heads of pre-five establishments in the area.

Enrolment Procedures

When you come with your child to enrol you will be asked to complete some very important information. We must have this information before you can leave your child in our care. Please be prepared to provide:

  • Two emergency contacts (names, addresses and telephone numbers)
  • Names and addresses of children’s doctor, dentist and health visitor
  • Details of vaccinations
  • Allergies and/or medical conditions
  • Special dietary requirements
  • Names of people who will normally collect your child from nursery (must be over 16)
  • Any care needs for your child and what you feel their next steps in learning are

As your child settles in to nursery we take it at their pace and slowly reduce the amount of time you are with them, until they are able to enjoy a full session with us alone.  This can take days or weeks and where your child needs extra support we aim to provide this in a way which ensures your child is at the centre.

Attendance

Regular attendance is key to fostering a sense of belonging and security at nursery. We ask parents to inform the school office when their child is unable to attend nursery. When children have spells of unexplained absence, parents will be contacted for the reason and likely length of absence.

Deferring Entry to Primary School

Who can defer entry to Primary School ?

Children who have their 5th birthday between 1st March and the first day of term in August must start school and exceptions can only be made in extreme circumstances and where it would be considered in the best interests of the child to defer. This would normally only apply to children with significant additional support needs.

ALL other children who have their 5th birthday on or after the first day of term in August up until the last day of February, are entitled to defer entry to school should their parents wish it.

If you wish to defer your child, please have a conversation with Miss Burns as soon as possible.
