Introduction to the Mathematics Department

In the Maths department we aim to ensure that all learners develop the mathematical and numerical skills they will need to live independently and thrive in today’s world of work.

It is important for our young people to be numerate to make sense of numbers, time, patterns and shapes for activities like cooking, reading timetables, and even playing sport. We want to equip young to be financially aware and to develop logical thinking, reasoning strategies and the ability to analyse statistics so that they can question the world we live in.

S1-S3 BGE

The Mathematics course for pupils in S1-3 is based on the Curriculum for Excellence outcomes.

Pupils will typically focus on 3rd Level outcomes in S1 with continued exposure and reinforcement of 2nd Level outcomes as required. From the beginning of S2, pupils will gain increased exposure to 4th level concepts.

Young people will work in mixed ability classes in S1-3, Teachers use a range of differentiated resources to ensure every pupil is both challenged and supported. If extra support is required we have a numeracy class in each year group where young people can build their numeracy skills and confidence.

Senior School

  • Maths: Mathematics is rich and stimulating and develops logical reasoning, analysis, problem solving skills, creativity and the ability to think in abstract ways. We offer National 4, National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher.
  • Applications of Maths: Applications of Mathematics brings mathematics into the real world. Young People develop knowledge, understanding and skills that will enable them to apply mathematical ideas and strategies in real-life situations. Applications of Mathematics can be studied alongside ‘traditional’ mathematics or taken as an alternative. The courses equip learners with mathematical and statistical skills that support a range of curricular areas, including humanities, social sciences, health care, and business. We offer National 4, National 5 and Higher.
  • Personal Finance: The Personal Finance Awards will develop knowledge and skills to cope confidently and effectively with the types of financial matters individuals are likely to encounter. From student loans, to pensions, the awards will prepare learners for financial decision making and managing personal finances throughout their lives. We offer NPAs at SCQF levels 4, 5 and 6.
  • Numeracy: As young tackle real-life problems, they will decide what numeracy and information handling skills to use, and how to apply those skills to an appropriate level of accuracy. We offer this alongside pupils maths courses at Level 4, 5 and 6.
