Introduction to the Art, Design & Photography Department

Here in the Art, Design and Photography Department, we aim to teach learners about the visual world, to develop their creativity, imagination and problem-solving skills. We hope to equip pupils with the skills and knowledge to help them meet their full creative potential within a welcoming and inclusive environment. Through delivering a varied and exciting curriculum, we hope to share with all learners a range of areas within Art, Design and Photography, to give them an introduction to one of the fastest developing industries in the UK.

The subjects delivered within the department are skills based and focus heavily on transferrable skills such as critical thinking, problem solving and time management. Our goal is for pupils to be able to confidently implement these skills within Art and across their curriculum. To take them with them into the wider world, whether they pursue a creative career or not.

S1-S3 BGE

Our Broad General Education (BGE) course is designed to introduce pupils to a range of practical skills. They will gain experience with several creative mediums to develop their skills and knowledge, and to help them find areas in which they can excel. This involves learning about the visual elements and design elements, following a creative process to its conclusion, developing technical drawing and painting skills and being introduced to a wide range of work by artists and designers.

The main aim of the S1- S3 curriculum is to give pupils an introduction into the subject, to equip them with the knowledge and skills that they will require to achieve in Art in S4–6. Across the curriculum pupils work will be assessed as they go along, as part of a portfolio. This body of work will be what allows their level to be set and is similar to the way their work will be assessed in S4 & 5.

Senior Phase

  • Art and Design: Candidates will create two practical portfolios – one Expressive and one Design. The course is 80% practical work and 20% written with candidates sitting a written exam about Art & Design theory.
  • Photography (Higher): For those who want to explore their interest in photography, increase their understanding and develop their skills in practical photography and in working with photographs.
  • Art and Design (NPA): The Art & Design NPA covers three units – Introduction to Mixed Media, Printmaking and Introduction to Illustration.
  • Photography (NPA): An introduction to practical photography through four units – Understanding Photography, Photographing People, Photographing Places and Working with Photographs.
