Build an Atom Class Competition

Mrs Hill’s S3 pupils recently took part in a lively Build an Atom competition, showcasing their understanding of atomic structure through creative and accurate models. Judged by A Thyne, the event celebrated teamwork, scientific thinking, and a touch of friendly rivalry.

Congratulations to Katia Pankova and XinChen Wang who were the winning team! Well done to all pupils for their enthusiasm and brilliant efforts.

Royal Navy STEM Event

Staff from the Royal Navy came in to school on Monday to work with 2M1, 2L and 2S pupils.

Pupils worked on their teamwork, problem solving and engineering skills as they participated in a number of STEM challenges.

We look forward to welcoming them back in to school on the 22nd September to work with 2M2 and 2A pupils.

Forth Bridge Education Centre

A group of 42 pupils from S2 and S3 recently enjoyed an exciting trip with their Graphics, Design & Manufacture, and Practical Woodworking classes to the Forth Bridge Education Centre.

The day focused on a team engineering challenge, where pupils worked in groups to design and build sections of a bridge. Once completed, the individual sections were carefully joined together to create the final structure. This hands-on activity encouraged teamwork, problem-solving, and creativity, with pupils seeing their hard work come together in an impressive finished design.

The trip was organised by Mr O’Donnelly, with fantastic support from Miss Linning, Mr McKenzie, and Miss Stevens. A big thank you goes to the staff for making the experience possible.

One of the highlights of the day was the opportunity to walk the bridges together in beautiful sunshine, giving everyone a chance to admire their achievement as a group.

Well done to all of the pupils involved – a fantastic day of learning, collaboration, and fun!

Industrials Cadets Bronze Challenge 2025

A group of S2 pupils took part and completed the Industrials Cadets Bronze Challenge 2025. The pupils undertook the healthy minds challenge and created an app called “u ok?” The pupils worked over 3 month period to not only create a functional app but also a report and presentation which they delivered at the city chambers. The pupils represented the school with excellent behaviour and really thrived speaking with other pupils and invited guests.
The pupils involved were:
  • Abby McConnell (S2, Skye)
  • Ruby Ho (S2, Lewis)
  • Grace McDermott (S2, Lewis)
  • George Edmondson (S2, Lewis)
  • Allan Karol Strzysz (S2, Lewis)

Science Centre and “All Energy” Conference

New S4 Physics and Chemistry pupils went on a trip to the Science Centre and “All Energy” Conference at the SEC. We watched a fascinating IMAX film about global warming and the need for renewable energy. We then had a tour round the Science Centre before heading over the river to the SEC to explore the stalls of renewable energy companies and got to speak to lots of people in these industries to find out about the innovations happening around the UK to help tackle the problem.

Scottish Space School – Applications Opening!

University of Strathclyde

9 – 13 June 2025

Applications Open Monday 17 February 2025

The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Strathclyde is delighted to be offering the Scottish Space School programme again in 2025. The programme will run at the University from Monday 9 – Friday 13 June 2025.

This is a fantastic opportunity for S5 pupils who are keen to move into a STEM pathway and are studying maths and/or the physical sciences at Higher level.

There are 100 places available on the week-long programme this year at which attendees will hear from staff at the University of Strathclyde who will provide an insight into studying and working in the field of engineering, as well as hearing from some of the world’s leading figures in space travel, including NASA Astronauts and engineers. Participants will also take part in a group project which they will present to a selection panel made up of staff from the University and NASA on the final day.

At the end of the programme in June, 8 lucky pupils will be selected to travel to Houston, USA in October 2025 to complete the ‘Learning Journey to NASA’ trip.

There is no cost associated with attending the programme in June, or the trip to Houston in October.

Further information is available on the Space School website here:
