Today in literacy we are working on our summarising skills. You will be summarising what you have read so far in our class novel, The Butterfly Lion. Remember in a summary, we do not write every single detail from each chapter. We focus on the main events by informing the reader of the key points.

The Dahl’s and Morpurgo’s will be summarising chapters 1 – 4 (which you should already have read). Then, these groups will complete a challenge, which is to think about the settings we have explored in the book so far. We will contrast the setting for chapter 1 and 2 against the setting for chapter 3 and 4.

The Blyton’s and Wilson’s will be summarising chapters 1 – 3 (which you should already have read). Then, your next task is to read chapter 4 (Bertie and the Lion), independently, with a family member or by reading along with the audio book.

P5a Tuesday 19th January 2021 – Maths

Good morning! We are continuing with our learning on area today. We won’t always have grid lines or squares when calculating the area of a shape, and there is a quicker way than counting every square! To find the area of a shape we multiply the length by the breadth. Please watch the PowerPoint and answer the questions as you go. Then, come back to Teams to find your group’s tasks for today.

Area using formula a=lxb p5a

The Rubies and Sapphires have 2 tasks to complete. These are attached below in separate files (task 1 and task 2). In task 1, you will see a grid behind the shapes. Use these to help you calculate the area, by counting how many squares are covered, or by multiplying the length and breadth. Then, in task 2, you no longer have the grid/squares so you will need to multiply the measurements given for the length and breadth to find the area. Remember your unit of measurement is cm2.

Rubies Sapphires Task 1 Tuesday

The Emeralds will be using the grid lines to help find the area of the shapes. Please write the area of each shape shown, by counting the squares. Remember if half of a square is shaded, we count this is 0.5cm2. Your challenge is then to draw a shape with an area of 10cm2.

If you have any questions, please put them in the class chat team.

Everyone

Listen to Chapter 3 of Charlotte’s Web – You Tube link below.

See ‘Pic 1’ – Extract 1. Have a read aloud to an adult. They can help you with any tricky words. Remember if you have a coloured overlay, you can place it over your screen!

From this extract, write down 5 unfamiliar words. Either use a dictionary or google to find the meaning/definition of each word and write it down. Note: If you use google, type the word then ‘meaning’.
Also, some words have more than one meaning, so try to make sure you get the meaning of the word as it was used in your extract.

Triangles

Watch You Tube link below for an introduction to 24 hour time.
‘Pic 1’ Read the top half of the page carefully and then try the questions in your jotter. For number 2 it may help if you can find something circular to draw around? Like a cup for instance. Or you may prefer to point with a pencil and show an adult where the minute hand would go.

‘Pic 2’ Time to the nearest minute – take care with this page. Remember which was hands travel around a clock.

Squares

‘Pic 3’ Reading a calendar. Answer the questions in your jotter.

‘Pic 4’ Counting the weeks between dates. Remembering there are 7 days in a week – for instance, Wednesday 1st March – one week further on will be Wednesday 8th March.
Write the answers in your jotter, or you may prefer to answer them orally and have an adult listen to your answers.

Circles

Use a cup, glass or bowl to draw around and make your own clock. Draw the numbers on in the correct places, and with help from an adult, can you mark in 5 minutes between each number?
Add hands at the end to show what the time is when you have finished. Using a ruler will help your clock hands look better.
