Good Morning Primary 3, well-done for making it to the end of week 2 of your home learning I am so proud of how hard you have worked!

Everyone

This morning for Maths we have our usual Friday chilli challenge worksheet for you to complete in your jotters. This week you will find a mixture of multiplication and subtraction questions. There is also a Power Point called Subtraction Strategies with some videos that you can watch to help you with the subtraction questions. Like in class I want you to challenge yourself with the chilli challenge, can you get two chillis done in Maths time?

P5a Friday 22nd January 2021 – Literacy

Today in literacy, we are linking our writing to our class novel, The Butterfly Lion. Firstly, I would like you to write a list of arguments ‘for’ and ‘against’ Bertie’s family keeping the white lion cub. Then, decide what you think is the best decision, and write a persuasive letter to Bertie’s father either persuading him to keep the white lion cub or sell him to the circus. Bertie feels very strongly about his father selling the white lion to the circus, so he lets him go out in the wild, but I want you to think about what you think is the best decision and why. Think about the relationship Bertie has with the lion, how he makes him feel, where they live, the needs of the lion and what life in the circus could be like for him.

Remember, the features of persuasive writing are flattery, repetition, alliteration, exaggeration and the use of powerful, persuasive language. Some vocabulary/phrases you may wish to include are: surely, of course, I believe that, for this reason, and it is clear that. I have attached a persuasive writing word bank which you can use to help you with your writing.

Don’t forget to use paragraphs, correct punctuation and interesting vocabulary… as always! Good luck.

Literacy

Phonics

As there is no live lesson today, I have uploaded a spelling list and some spelling activities that you can have a go at this morning before completing your reading task. The spelling activities are the same as the ones you had a go at last week, you can choose to do some of these again. We will add some different active spelling tasks next week.

Reading

Today’s literacy focus will be on reading again. This week we will be looking at an Illustrator task.

Green group

The first thing that you need to do is watch the PowerPoint Presentation called “Illustrator Task (The Magic Finger)”. This will explain what we are learning and what you should do in your task today.

Once you have watched this, you should complete your illustrator task in your jotter.

After you finish this, there is a set of questions for you to have a go at answering. These are named “(Green) The Magic Finger Q’s”. These can also be completed in your jotter.

Chilli Challenge

Good morning primary 3! We have made it to Friday and the end of our second week of home learning. Well done! What a hard working bunch you all are – you continue to make us very proud. You should be proud of yourselves too.

All

Instead of a mental maths starter, you should continue with the Sumdog challenge set from yesterday. Try to reach the target (if you haven’t already).

Once you have spent some time on Sumdog, it is time for a Friday Chilli Challenge. Before you start your Chilli Challenge, there is a PowerPoint (Subtraction Strategies) that has some useful information/videos that will help you when you complete your challenges today.

Squares and Triangles

You should aim to do at least 2 of the challenges. It is up to you which flavour of chillies you go for.

Circles

You may wish to do just one challenge. Again it is up to you which flavour of chilli you choose to complete.

The chilli challenge for today is attached at the bottom of this post, it will give you a reminder of what you have to do. Enjoy!

P5a Friday 22nd January 2021 – Maths

Good morning, P5! Today is our final day working on area and perimeter. All groups are working on tasks which involve questions where you are asked to calculate the area and the perimeter. This is a good way to see if you can remember the difference between perimeter and area and if you can know how to calculate both.

The Rubies and Sapphires are working on a match up activity. You will need to use your problem-solving skills for this and your knowledge of calculating the area of compound shapes from yesterday’s maths lesson. You are being asked to match the questions up with the answers inside the bubbles. You can just write these out on paper. Sometimes you will have to work backwards, as you might be given the area of a shape and just the breadth, and you are asked to work out the missing length. Remember to find the area of a shape we multiply the length by the breadth, so you would need to work out what you multiply the given breadth by to get the area they have provided.

The Emeralds will be working on a different sheet. You will be calculating the perimeter and area of rectangles. Remember to find the perimeter, we add up all of the lengths around the outside as we want to know the distance around the shape, and to find the area, we multiply the length by the breadth as we want to work out the space inside the shape.

Literacy Task – 11.10am-12.10pm

We have been learning the sound – z

Today we are going to read a story during our live lesson called ‘Dear Zoo’ by Rod Campbell. You can listen to the story again using the link below.

https://video.link/w/CoXIb

Activity

Think of a pet you would like from the zoo. Your pet could be an animal from the story or your favourite animal. Draw a picture your new pet and write a sentence beginning with ‘ I went to the zoo and I got a ________’.

Think about what your animal looks like, what it will eat, where it will live and what it will do. You could make up a story about your pet and tell someone in your family.

Numeracy Task – 9.30-10.15am

Activity

Yesterday we learned about the different coins you can use. Today your task is to make a shop using items around your house! This could be a toy shop, food shop, shoe shop or anything else you can think of. Can you make labels for the items in your shop?  You could make prices up to 10p. Can you play shops with someone in your house? You could take turns at playing the shopkeeper and the customer. If you have any 1p coins in your house, can you work out what coins you would need to pay for items up to 10p?

Everyone

*Writing – Pic 1 – Have a good look at the cartoon. It uses a very simple storyline and shows the speech inside speech bubbles. Can you use a ruler and create a comic story? Keep to two characters as it makes it easier. You could use a situation that really did happen in your house!

*Pic 2 – Here we see the comic story from Pic 1 changed into being written as a script. Study it carefully and notice how it is set out.
Can you take your cartoon story and change it to a script?

Apples and Oranges

*Pic 3 – Rewrite the sentences putting in the correct punctuation – take care with speech marks!
Example – Mum shouted “David, put your sister down!”

Bananas

*Pic 4 – Rewrite the sentences putting capital letters in where needed.

Triangles

*Pic 1 and Pic 2. -Reading ‘Before We Start’ and ‘Let’s Learn’ carefully first to ensure understanding.
Answer the questions in your jotter. Pay special attention to Challenge.

Squares

*Pic 3 – Answer the questions in your jotter. Before starting ‘Challenge’ you should read it carefully and ask an adult to help if it seems tricky. Good luck!
* Pic 4 – Image
Again, read carefully! Write the answers as asked in your jotter.
Number 2 may be a bit confusing… just try your best. [😉]

Circles

*Can you write down a daily diary of what times you do certain things? Ask an adult for help if you need it.
Example:
8 o’clock – I got up and got dressed.
Half past 8 – I had my breakfast.
