Fractions- Glasgow Counts

Today we were introduced to our new learning all about fractions.  We used our understanding of fractions being equal parts to  work with a partner to create our own fraction walls ( with some help from some lovely primary 7s as well)

P6a and P6b Summerlee Trip

P6a and P6b enjoyed they’re outing to Summerlee Industrial Museum last week. They got to experience a range of activities as well as having the freedom to look around the museum itself and read the information next to the exhibits. Ask us about some of the facts we learned while we were there.

Dear Parents

We would like to highlight our concerns to all pupils and families about the inappropriate use of social media and online platforms out with school hours on their personal or family devices.

The problems which pupils and families are highlighting are:

  • The use of private or direct messaging to send abusive, threatening and intimidating messages

  • Sending photos and or videos, copied from other social media accounts, to cause humiliation and distress

  • Sharing of gossip and misinformation

As these problems occur out with the school day, there are limits to what we can realistically be expected to deal with, so your support is invaluable therefore we ask that you closely monitor your children while they are using all of their mobile devices, tablets and consoles. Please bear in mind that all social media and messaging apps have a minimum user age, none of which are below 13 years old, so primary school aged children should not be using them. Typically used platforms for negative behaviours are Snapchat, TikTok, Fortnite etc.

If you have any concerns about your child’s online activity, the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) website contains useful information: www.ceop.police.uk

Thank you in advance for your continued support.

P2/1 – The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark

The children in P2/1 have been learning all about barn owls this term through the book The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark.

We have been doing a lot of work on telling the time to work out what Plop the barn owl is doing at different times of the day and night. Primary 1s have been working on o’clock and Primary 2s have been working on o’clock and half-past:

Plop is a night bird who wants to be awake in the day time so the children have been organising some activities that we all do into day and night jobs:

We have also used Scratch on the iPads to draw Plop the barn owl and then create a background of his home in the tree with either a day or night sky. Next the children were able to programme Plop to fly across the screen.

We started writing our own non-fiction books all about barn owls this week which we can’t wait to share with you all when they are finished!

Comments Off on Attendance and Late Coming

Attendance and Late Coming

We have added a new section to our website about approach to managing pupil attendance and late coming. You will find this in the Our School section of the website. Below you will find the most recent information for families about the importance of attendance in school and being in school on time every day.

Attendance at Hillington Primary

Attending and taking part in learning – wherever learning takes place – is fundamental to making sure that our young people become successful learners, confident individuals, effective contributors and responsible citizens. Hillington Primary is committed to improving the life chances of all of our young people. For children and young people to succeed in education they need to attend school to access the learning and support that will help them to achieve and attain.

When a pupils attendance level falls below 95% this becomes a concern for the school and as such we will invite you to meetings to discuss the best possible supports your family would benefit from to support your child to attend school.

Parent/Carer Responsibilities

As the parent/carer of the child you are legally responsible to provide an education for your child. If you have not engaged with the school to discuss and implement ways to support and improve your child’s attendance you will be invited to a Maximising Attendance Meeting at the school. We understand that there can be occasions when it can be difficult to ensure your child attends school regularly and there can be reasonable excuses as to why a child cannot attend school. There may be information that the school is not aware of that you could share.
It is in your interest to attend this meeting to explain the reasons for your child’s nonattendance and to discuss ways to support your child’s attendance at school. If you fail to attend this meeting or satisfy the school that there is a reasonable excuse for your child’s non-attendance at school, the school may issue you with an Attendance Order. The school Senior Leadership Team will decide if you have a reasonable excuse for your child not attending school.

For more information about Glasgow’s Positive Approach to the Promotion of Attendance please click on the link below to access the parent/carer information leaflet.

A Positive Approach to the Promotion of Attendance in Glasgow Schools

Late Coming

As part of our monitoring of attendance and late -coming we will contact families whose children are late more than twice in one week to offer support and guidance. It is important that pupils arrive in school on time each day. The school day starts at 8.55am at Hillington Primary. They playground is supervised from 8.45am and breakfast club is open from 8am for families who wish to drop their children off earlier.

Late Coming – The Facts

  • Late coming can affect achievement

  • Late coming disrupts lessons

  • Late coming can embarrass and/or upset your child

  • 5 minutes late every day adds up to 3 days of learning lost each year

  • 10 minutes adds up to 6 days of learning lost each year

  • 15 minutes adds up to 10 days of learning lost each year

  • 20 minutes adds up to 13 days of learning lost each year

Young Writers Competition 2022

We are delighted to share with you that some of our pupils poems, written whilst taking part in a recent competition, have been chosen for publication in one of the Young Writers 2022 publications. Young Writers aims to encourage young people to engage in creative writing and poetry by working with schools to run competitions across the UK.

If your child has entered the competition and their work has been chosen for publication, a letter will be sent to you in your child’s bag in the coming days. Families are asked to check their child’s entry for any spelling or grammar errors and make any changes as they see fit. You can make any changes to your child’s work in two ways –

  1. By visiting www.youngwriters.co.uk/online, entering the username and access code attached to the letter in your child’s school bag and making any changes online.
  2. By making any changes on the copy of the poem, which you will find in the letter sent to you in your child’s school bag, and returning via post to – Young Writers Acc, Remus House, Coltsfoot Drive, Woodston, Petersborough PE2 9BF

For pupils work to be published Young Writers also require permission from a parent/carer to publish. You can give permission in two ways –

  1. By visiting www.youngwriters.co.uk/online and entering the username and access code attached to this letter.
  2. By completing the permission sheet, which you will find in the letter sent to you in your child’s school bag  and returning via post to – Young Writers Acc, Remus House, Coltsfoot Drive, Woodston, Petersborough PE2 9BF

Children who have taken part will be awarded a certificate in school. We will share pictures of pupils with their certificates on our Twitter page in due course. If you don’t already follow us on Twitter you can find us @HillingtonPS

In the letter you will in your child’s bag you will also find details on how to purchase a copy of the book your child’s work has been published in. Please note families do not need to purchase a copy of any publication. The school will receive a free copy of each publication and pupils will have access to these in our school library. Families should not feel any pressure to purchase copies of any publication. If you do not wish to purchase a copy of a publication please leave that section of the letter in your child’s school bag blank.

We are sure will agree that this is a fantastic achievement for our young people. Well done boys and girls.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the school. Thank you for your continued support.

Mummification in P5/4

P5/4 had a fun afternoon mummifying a tomato (or apple). We followed the same process the Ancient  Egyptians used to  mummify a body. In 4 weeks time we will see if our pieces of fruit have been preserved. We weighed our tomatoes before we covered them in salt and baking soda and we made predictions as to whether they would be lighter or heavier after 4 weeks.

We will let you know our findings!
