Book Week Scotland @ JPA Library

Book Week Scotland is always an exciting time in any library, and especially welcome in 2020! We weren’t able to celebrate in the library as we normally would (such as last years Books and Bubbles Party!) but there was still plenty happening over the week online!

The theme of Book Week Scotland this year was ‘Future’, which inspired some of the activities we had during the week.  While pupils weren’t able to come to the library and see our BWS display, featuring books set in the future, pupils were able to browse a virtual display!  These virtual displays have helped to bring the library to pupils digitally, and Book Week Scotland was a great opportunity to show off what the library has to offer!  That being said, looking at the books, the future would appear to be… unwelcoming…

The library also hosted a competition throughout November, inviting all pupils to share their stories of the future! There were some great responses, with top stories published in our December newsletter.  Much like our ‘future’ fiction, our pupils envisage a bleak future for us all…

Book Week Scotland is a great time to get more involved in reading and writing, so pupils were given the opportunity to check out author talks, featuring some of their favourite authors such as David Walliams, Liz Pichon and Malorie Blackman!  The great news is that these videos are available all year from Authors Live on Demand, which means pupils will always have the opportunity to learn more about their favourite books from their favourite authors (which is my way of saying if you haven’t checked it out yet – you should!)

The biggest hit of the week was our JPA Big Book Quiz!  With a £10 National Book Token up for grabs, and a new round of the quiz every day, our pupils were quick to test their bookish knowledge throughout the week!  The quiz rounds covered book covers (image), first lines, movie adaptations, blurbs and emoji titles!  Lots of pupils entered, making for a fierce competition, ultimately won by S1 pupil Shrika with a very impressive score of 26/30 points, narrowly beating the competition to win the prize! It was wonderful to see how well our pupils know their books!

Hopefully in the future – or rather, next year – we can celebrate Book Week Scotland in the library again.  Either way, the Big Book Quiz will definitely be making a comeback in 2021, so start your preparations now and READ! READ! READ!

Book Week Scotland @ Rosshall Academy

Book Week Scotland is slightly different this year, but there are still lots of things happening! At Rosshall we’re “Writing The Future – Now” with S1 English classes embarking on a project on describing what they think the city of Glasgow will look like in 50 years time, in 2070. To support this, I have created a display showing how Glasgow has changed in the last 50 years from 1970 until now, and how it might look in 2070.

       

I also created a Timeline of Science Fiction books published each year from 1970 until 2020 to keep the literary theme going.

Book Week Scotland, 16th -22nd November

Pupil review

Here is our first pupil recommendation from Fatima S3, who does superb work helping out in the Library setting up book displays, and helping with crafts for the younger pupils. She is almost half way through this book by wonderful Scottish author Lindsay Littleson.

           

“I recommend ‘The Mixed-Up Summer of Lily McLean’. I really enjoyed reading it. It talks about summer, family and friends”.

We’ve also been using books to find out about Millport, which is the setting for part of this really exciting story.

 

We hope that other pupils will read this book, and also the next book by Lindsay Littleson, called ‘The Awkward Autumn of Lily McLean’

Here at Holyrood, Book Week Scotland is one of the highlights of our year ! We can’t wait to get started with celebrating books and reading, and join in the fun with authors, book lovers and the reading community all over Scotland!

In addition, we will be reading, sharing books, and holding our own celebration events all week:

  • How many Scottish authors and books set in Scotland can we read?  There may also be some pupil book reviews!

  • Competition for S1 – design your own mini-book on a Scottish theme Collect an instruction sheet from the Library…. easy and fun! All entries will be displayed in the Library and you could win a prize.
  • Senior pupils will be reading stories from this anthology of writing about the ‘Future’. You can collect your free copy from the Library. Happy reading!

 

  • We will be sharing some of our work in pictures and writing all through the week, and hope that as many pupils and staff as possible will join us to celebrate Book Week Scotland

Book Week Scotland at Bella!

Book Week Scotland runs from November 16th to 22nd 2020. This year is obviously going to be a bit different from the norm, but that hasn’t stopped me from doing a poster!  This year’s theme is “Future” so I looked at Science Fiction and possible visions of the future.

Access to the School Library is still limited, however we’ve been ensuring pupils can access books through eBook inductions delivered in classrooms and by giving classrooms sets of book boxes.

Check out November’s newsletter, featuring new books in the Library, highlighted books from Libby, author spotlight on Scottish author Theresa Breslin, a National Non-Fiction Novemeber and Wartime reading lists. October’s newsletter is still available on Teams if you’ve missed it.

Book Week Scotland is celebrated 16th-22nd November and will be taking place digitally this year. Some classes will be taking part in the virtual book festival. In previous years we’d have celebrated BWS with book swaps and activities. This year, we’ve gone digital. We’ll be writing a letter to our future selves. Each letter will be completed and sent to the School Librarian who will print it out and store it in a time capsule. You can collect it on your final year of school.

For Higher and Advanced Higher pupils, remmeber to utilise ProQuest , CORE and  GALE Literature Resource Centre for your assignments. S1+2 History pupils can still access the GLAM website links.
