What are the Rights Knights?
The Cleeves Rights Knights are our pupil leadership group who help to make sure that children’s rights are understood, respected and put into action across our school.
Our Rights Knights represent the voices of children throughout Cleeves Primary and play an important part in our journey as a UNICEF Rights Respecting School. They help pupils learn about the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and encourage everyone in our school community to use rights-respecting language and understand how rights are part of everyday school life.
The Rights Knights meet regularly to share ideas, discuss what is happening in our school and think about ways we can make Cleeves even better. They gather the views of other children, help to lead campaigns and activities, contribute to assemblies and displays, and celebrate examples of Rights in Action across our school.
Being a Rights Knight is about more than wearing a badge! 🛡️ It means being a voice for others, listening carefully to different viewpoints and helping to turn children’s ideas into positive change.
Our Rights Knights help us to make sure that every child at Cleeves knows their rights, can enjoy their rights and knows that their voice matters.

Having achieved our Silver: Rights Aware Award, our Rights Knights are now helping to lead Cleeves on our journey towards the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Gold Award – Rights Respecting.

What is the UNCRC?
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is an international agreement that sets out the rights that every child and young person should have.
It contains 54 articles covering all aspects of a child’s life, including their rights to be safe, healthy, included, listened to and able to learn and develop.
These rights belong to every child, regardless of who they are, where they live, what they believe or what their family circumstances are.
At Cleeves Primary, the UNCRC is an important part of our school life. Children learn about their rights, through their rights and for their rights. This means that we don’t simply teach children what their rights are – we aim to make sure they experience these rights in their everyday life at school and are empowered to stand up for their own rights and the rights of others.
🗣️ Article 12 – The Right to be Heard
Article 12 is particularly important to our Rights Knights and our wider pupil leadership work. It says that children have the right to express their views about matters that affect them and for those views to be taken seriously.
Our Rights Knights help us put this right into practice by making sure pupil voice is heard, valued and leads to action.
