P7 Transition

Shawlands Academy

Brief Profile: A meeting for prospective parents is held in the Autumn term in Battlefield Primary.  This meeting is open to any parent of a child in Primary 7 and gives interested parents the chance to meet the Headteacher of Shawlands Academy.  This meeting is an opportunity to hear about school routines, curriculum and to meet some of the key members of staff that children will work with in S1.

Liaison Activities: Regular consultation takes place throughout the session with Ms Sinclair, Depute Head Teacher, who is responsible for the primary-secondary liaison and the S1 curriculum at the Academy. All Primary 7s are encouraged to attend After School Clubs in November, where they will get the chance to meet staff and fellow pupils moving up to the secondary next session.  Buses are provided for these clubs. Selected pupils can participate in the Bridging the Gap programme which provides an enhanced transition to Secondary for those who may be slightly unsure about some aspects about the move up to S1.

During the summer term, prior to transfer, a pastoral care teacher from the Academy visits the Primary 7 classes so that he/she can get to know pupils and any problems they may have , before transfer to secondary.   Learning support teachers also visit our classes to work alongside pupils in various curricular areas.

Pupils spend their last week of the session at the Academy in their S1 class groups following a typical timetable.

A small number of our pupils move on to other secondary schools.  We work closely with the relevant staff at these schools once we are made aware of them and children will be supported to visit transition days as and when they arise.
