Thank you to everyone who donated to our food bank. We managed to collect an amazing amount of non-perishable food items which we have passed along to Glasgow South East Food bank.  This food will help many people and we hope we can continue to support our local food banks in the future.

Our trip to the Science Centre was lots of fun.  First of all, we explored different  science experiments. We learned about magnets, floating heads and solved puzzles.

After this, we visited the iMax and saw a 3D film about space.  We looked so cool with our 3D glasses on 😎😎 This taught us about the preparation that goes into travelling to space, gravity, stars and planets.

Our final experience was a science show called Water Water Everywhere.  Our scientist taught us all about water and it’s 3 states, soaked us with a water gun!

Today was World Porridge Day and we celebrated by making our own porridge.  

First, we learned a bit about the work Mary’s Meals do to feed over 1.5 million children across the world.  Children in counties like Malawi receive a cup of porridge every day at school.  This encourages the children to go to school as they know they will get something to eat.  

We had 4 activities happening in our class.  The first group was converting grams into kilograms as we needed this knowledge when measuring out ingredients.

The next group were displaying different numbers using concrete materials. We used thousands, hundreds, tens and units. This helps us with our insider standing of place value and it is helpful to see a number represented by different materials, rather than just written down.

Another group were measuring oats and milk using scales and a jug.  We followed the measurements given on our recipe and we also chopped apples and bananas which we used as toppings on our porridge.

At the final station, we mixed our oats and milked in a pot.  We used a portable stove and cooked the porridge over a hot hob.  Here we learned what we could add to make the porridge thicker and thinner.  

We loved celebrating World Porridge Day and remembering the amazing work Mary’s Meals do.

We have been learning about social class.  We have learned what it is, what defines a social class and how people are split into different social classes.  We have also explored occupations which stereotypically go along with a social class and we are trying to stop this stereotype.

Today, we created our own riddles to do with social class.  Have a read through them and see if you agree with anything we have said.  

Tuesday –

We started our outdoor learning week with some reading activities in our upper playground.  Each group carried out different activities – using iPads to record videos of us using onomatopoeia, using a leaf catalogue to find different leaves in our playground, reading a text and answering comprehension questions and enjoying reading in a calm and peaceful outdoor space.

During our maths lesson, we became sustainable citizens and litter picked around our school grounds.  We used our data handling learning to record the amount of litter we picked using tally marks and then created a frequency table of our results.  We will turn these into graphs and charts in class later this week.

We finished our first day of outdoor learning week by playing basketball with Class 2 on the MUGA.  We recapped on all the skills we have learned over the past 6 weeks and used these skills to compete against each other in game situations. 

There were some serious skills on display during the games! Hector took amazing action shots of us too.

Wednesday –

On Wednesday, we went geocaching at Pollok Park with Primary 6 and Primary 7.

We followed directions on the map of the Geocaching app and hunted al over the park for the geocaches.  We raced against the other teams and ran as fast as we could to be the first team to find the Geocache.  We successfully found 2 geocaches!!

Please remember to bring any non-perishable food items into school this week as we are donating them to our local food bank. Here is a list of some things we desperately need:

Our whole school trip to Edinburgh Zoo was so much fun!!!!

We saw lots of animals and made memories with our friends and families.  Being together on trips like this is very funny and we had lots of laughs.

We visited the pandas, the hippos, the penguins, the monkeys and lots more animals.  The animals were eating, playing or sleeping, and some of them were quite smelly!

There were smiles all round …

After a long day of having fun, it was all too much for Zack 😴😴

Miss Cohen does lots of work in the school on social enterprise and she arranged an event for us on Wednesday.  7 social enterprises came in to our school and set up a station which told us all about who they are and what they do.  The social enterprises who came along were The Piano Project, Milk Cafe, VoiceOver Interpreting Govan, Pollokshields Trust, Galgael, Kaleyard, Music Broth and Nutrition Scotland.

We split up into groups and visited each station.  We asked them questions about their social enterprise and found out more about what each social enterprise does and why.  It was good to find out who benefits from each social enterprise as this is a main reason why lots of social enterprises start up.

As well as hearing all about each social enterprise and finding out more about what they do, we also got to sample food, play instruments and take part in fun activities.  These hands-on experiences helped us understand the enterprises more and were lots of fun.

We took the subway to the Glasgow Film Theatre and watched 6 short films.  The films were based on different world issues like gender equality and climate change.  We have been talking about these issues in class which made the films make a lot of sense.  It was good to get the chance to speak about each film after it and give feedback.  We are getting better at this.

We visited Urban Roots at the Victoria Gardens as part of our inter-disciplinary learning.  Victoria Gardens are allotments in Pollokshields which have lots of fruits, vegetables, plants and flowers growing in them.

We were allowed to go into some of the allotments and see what was growing.  We even got to eat some of the apples if they had fallen from the trees.

We also did an activity and had to identify different vegetables.  This was fun and Stewart was shocked at how much we knew already.

What a fun trip and this taught us lots more about how food is grown and buying locally.  We were allowed to take some rhubarb to sample too!!
