Week beginning 22nd January

Hello everyone, we hope you have had a great week! There has been lots happening in Newport Nursery this week, here is a sneak peek…….

On Monday a group of children looked at the match and spell game where they had to match the letters on their board to make a word. Some children then extended their learning where they turned over the board so it was blank and had to spell the word again without any prompt!

A group of children have taken part in making a mind map for all f our ideas on what we think we need to buy for the nursery to help us learn with the Christmas enterprise money. The children came up with some great ideas like a CD player, outdoor sport equipment and things to use at snack to help us be more independent.

Children have also been creating their own story books based on different interests. The children were able to help search on the computer for pictures, print them off and then make them into a story book.

We weren’t able to attend the forest due to fallen trees however we were able to have our forest experience in the garden again where children chose to come and took part in a bird watch. Children went in pairs or alone to see what/how many bird they could spot and marked down on their bird watch sheet.

After finding a sour orange at lunch time, this prompted a discussion with the children and Miss McKenzie about sweet and sour food and how orange trees grow. This lead to children discussing how an orange tree grows from a seed but we realised we didn’t know how long it takes so we used the computer for research and found a video of a time-lapse of the orange tree growing over time which can take between 7-15 years to bear fruit! Eli and Eleanor decided to take the seeds how to one day have their own orange trees.

We had a lovely Burns lunch to celebrate Burns day! We also tasted some shortbread at snack which everyone gave the thumbs up to!

We continued our interest in birds this week as we were inspired by artists and pictures to paint our own at a painting station! Everyone showed off their skills as they used a range of colours and textures to get the look that they wanted.

Children have been completing their learning at home to go on our learning wall to share what they have been doing at home! Charlotte shared that he favourite toy is a troll called Poppy. Fraser brought in his favourite Power Ranger toys to show off and did some mark making for the wall!

We have had a lot of imaginary play this week as children have been using a variety of resources to create models such as stools, cushions, blankets and rugs.

Cammy and Timothy worked together to make a bridge for the cars in the sand. They collaborated their ideas to make it work and built a lovely bridge as well as a lovely friendship!

Eli and Elyn worked outside as they made bird feeders using lard and bird seed. They moulded it into shape and added the seeds and left it for putting up next week.

Reminders:

  • Our PEEP group is on next Thursday 1st February at 9am for anyone who wants to join!
  • Our forest sessions until further notice will be in the bottom garden so if you could please come to the nursery dressed for a forest session.

We hope you have a great weekend and we will see you all next week!

The Newport Nursery Team x

Week beginning 15th January

We have had another busy week this week and have been exploring the snowy weather. Here is a snapshot at what we have been doing this week…..

Instead of our usual forest session we went to the bottom garden where we had a fire to heat up some pancakes and toast marshmallows for snack! we spoke about previous learning when looking at ice where we discussed how much there was and what happens if the weather was to get warmer again.

The children created snow angels in the snow and spoke about patterns and sizes as they compared each others snow angels on the ground. Children also noticed footprints in the snow! We made a guess that they were from our garden robin who likes to visit daily!

After a morning in the garden, we spent some time in the top garden where children used cardboard boxes and crates in their play. The children were using the cardboard boxes as trampolines and the crates as cars.

Children have been taking time to read stories with one another both inside and out. They are reading the stories by talking through what is happening in the pictures.

Since revamping the woodwork area, groups of children have been creating models using a range of materials and tools. the children can confidently discuss how they can keep safe at the woodwork bench and different models they are able to make with no support.

Leo, Alex, Elyn, Isla and charlotte helped to create a bar graph using buttons to collect their information for the learning wall on what the most popular toy was for our new learning wall which is Toys. They were able to count out the buttons and see which had the most.

Charlotte has been developing her early writing skills as she uses the wooden slices with common words that she needs to write a letter for her granny.

A group of boys were creating their own game outside with the bikes. They made a chase and capture game and took turns on who was the chaser.

Isla and Sophie have been using the wooden blocks to write their names out and other familiar names to them with a little support.

Lucas has been doing some great number work as he adds 3 numbers together to get the right answer with very little support.

Cora and charlotte created their own drum sets using cushions and wooden spoons singing along as they tapped the spoons.

Children have been exploring the new props at the learning wall such as the story books and robot timer game.

Reminders:

  • Can we please make sure that when we leave the nursery garden after drop off and pickup that we close and lock the gate afterwards to ensure our children are kept safe.
  • Forest is on a Tuesday where we meet at Waterston Crook car park.
  • The weather can change at any minute so can we please ask that you bring in gloves, scarves, hats and cosy clothing so your child can be outside for longer as they love to be out in all weathers!

We hope you have a lovely weekend, see you next week!

The Newport Nursery Team!

Newport Nursery week 4th-12th January 2024.

Welcome back everyone!  and a very Happy New Year to you all.  We hope you all had a lovely Christmas and are ready for the new term.

This week in Nursery we have had Miss McKenzie, Mrs Wilson,  Mrs Laing our Nursery teacher, Miss McPhail our Early Years Development officer along with Miss Paul  who is another EYO helping us over the coming weeks.

This week learning is… Exploring, Predicting, Being Curious, Literacy, Mathematics, Sharing, Self-Esteem, Creativity, Motor Skills, Turn Taking, Technology, Outdoor Learning and Problem Solving.

We would also like to give a very warm welcome to all our new children and families that have recently started with us, We have welcomed Odil, Robin, Jackson and Leo into the nursery room. Hello!!!!

We have started off with a big bang with some children showing an interest in the forth coming celebration of Burn’s Night and sharing their interest in the music and dancing. They also asked to discover more asking questions such as what is Haggis? and in using their developing understanding of how and what they needed t to use to do this. W e are starting to develop a small display by the entrance working with the children. If anyone has anything that they would like to share with children that is linked to this topic we would love to see.

A new Learning wall topic has just been started with a group of children showing an interest in Toys. Here are some of the questions they have asked..

“Where do toys come from?

“What are they made from?

What are my parents and the ladies at nursery favourite toys?

The interest of a Hobbit arose when one child expressed that a Hobbit was his favourite toy. This lead to lots of little Hobbits emerging in the nursery on Thursday. Some children worked with the adult to gather information and recorded this using a mind map to which we will create with them a simple bar graph to display their findings. This came from one of the questions asked by the children. The children showed confidence to ask all the adults in the school, enjoying time visiting all the different rooms.

Outside the children have continued their interest in playing a range of team games. The popular ones at the moment are Hide and Seek, Octopus, and What’s the time Mr Wolf and Musical statues. Some children are using their initiative to create their own games, sharing ideas and working together at times using a range of loose parts to deepen the game. We have also seen lots of obstacle courses being constructed where children have been challenging themselves using a range of skills and in taking risks. Some children have asked if we can use the gum hall so we will be creating a small obstacle course to continue supporting their interest.

Although we did not visit the forest this week we still manage to create a similar experience down in the bottom garden area. The children experience having a fire that included  a delicious hot snack and drink, some children stating that..

“They’re the best hot dogs and hot chocolate ever”

The children enjoyed climbing the different trees, using the loose parts to move around and roll each other in the big barrel. Some children were helping to redesign areas moving heavy soil that encouraged the children to problem solve on how they could move this. One child designated himself has the truck driver driving the tricycle bike with a bucket of soil to the bath planter. While others helped to fill up the buckets. Whilst down there the children were continuing their developing skills to  risk assessing by checking areas they were they might slip. This lead to some using skills to explore the ice puddles, recalling previous learning experiences, and shows skills to predict outcomes on how long the ice would last.

Miss McPhail our EYDO has been very busy working with the children to redevelop the wood work area in the nursery . We have listened to the children’s thoughts which they are continuing their skills to record and  display information through a mind map. They and have added new tools and included a special box of tools which the children need to ask an adult to support them in using these when they are creating their model. They have also created a set of safety rules to be followed by the children when they are using these. The children are developing their own learning to assess and manage risk to protect themselves and reduce the potential  of harm when possible.

Week beginning 4th December 2023

Hello everyone, we hope you have had a great week at Newport Nursery. Here is a look at what we have been up to this week…

Our children have been very creative in a number of ways as they prepare for our christmas enterprise project where we will be selling decorative cushions, tree decorations, christmas keyrings, reindeer food and festive playdough packs.

Our nursery enterprise project contains:

Reindeer food – £1

Tree decoration £1

Snowman Keyring £1

Decorative cushion £2

Festive playdough packs £1.50

Sophie and Isla also got creative as they made pet toys! They used paper, string and feathers to make cat and dog toys which inspired others to join in and create their own.

Timothy has mastered the art of envelope making! Timothy worked out how to make an envelope as there wasn’t one big enough to fit his card in and created lots of them for his peers to use.

We all helped to put up the christmas tree and place the decorations where we wanted. Some children helped with the lights and some wanted to put on the tinsel! Cammy chose to put the angel on top of the tree!

We have been opening our advent calander each day at nursery! We worked out what number came before and after the date and counted out how many doors were open so far and left to open. Every child will have a turn at opening the doors as we make our way down the register!

We had another great forest session where we did lots of exploring, some children built dens, helped to look after the fire and even created more stories! Isla created a story about elves and used her peers as inspiration!

Chloe has been showcasing her mark making skills as she creates pictures for her peers of barbie and Ken, singing along as she draws 😄

children have been exploring completing puzzles on the whiteboard as they select what picture they wanted to do. Children were able to challenge themselves as they decided if they wanted a background picture to help them complete it or not.

Other children chose to make symmetrical pictures where they had to complete the missing side. There was also a game where children explored their numeracy skills and had to order the amounts and match them to the correct number. The children really showcased their abilities!

Elyn has been creating her own story for the first time this week as she reads her story out loud with an adult. She named her story The Candy Cane. Well done Elyn what a fantastic story!

Charlotte also spent a lot of time creating a wonderful story called The Boy and the Girl on Christmas Eve. What confident reading Charlotte!

Carrying on from the childrens interests in stories, the children took a walk up to the school library where they chose a range of stories to bring back and share with their peers.

Reminders:

  • The nursery sing along is on Friday 15th December
  • Nursery christmas party is on Tuesday 19th December
  • The last day of term is Wednesday 20th December

Wow here we are in December!

Happy Friday Everyone 🙂

Well what another busy week we’ve had in nursery.

Lots of puzzles and jigsaws this week. Learning to work together and cooperate. Checking that all the puzzles and games are complete, following instructions and using our knowledge of shapes and positional language.

Some of the children have been practicing their numeracy skills with Miss McKenzie and demonstrating their knowledge of time, seasons and months. Lots of quality observations for our PLJs.

Art Area:

We have been doing some collaborative painting this week, with some of the boys experimenting with colour mixing and working together to create works of art.
Oran discovered how to make secondary colours and Christian & Alex identified how to change the colour shades. Great Job 🙂

Learning Wall:

Lots of the children have been using the wooden characters to create their own stories at the learning wall area. Showing their understanding of the different ways to create and tell stories. The children are still getting so much from the learning wall topic and it is fantastic to see them use there knowledge to further their own learning.

The nursery team 🌟🙂

Newport Nursery week commencing 20.11.23

This week learning is… Exploring, Predicting, Being Curious, Literacy, Mathematics, Sharing, Self-Esteem, Creativity, Motor Skills, Turn Taking, Technology, Outdoor Learning and Problem Solving.

Happy Friday everyone. What a quick week this has been, and what a busy week the  with all the learning and fun that the all the children have been involved with.

Outside the children have  been showing off their skills to participate in group games, sharing ideas and following the rules of the game. Duck, Duck, Moose seemed quite popular. While others enjoyed showing their decorating skills, acting out the roles of painters and decorators  that incorporated a range of different tools needed to do various jobs.

Some children continued their interest in a bear hunt,  participated in using the Bee bot to programme a set of instructions to move to the different areas relating to the story, such as first they needed to go to the grass,….. then to the cave. The children had previously created images of these to be placed in different areas for the Bee bot to go to. They then used skills to estimate how many spaces it needed to get to the pictures. They used a range of directional  and positional language to describe its journey.

Some more children expressed a wish to revisit the Gummy bear experiment,  with lots of discussions arose to describe, compare and predict. We discussed thoughts on what they water might do, and about the time needed to see if any changes would occur. This lead to making jelly for their snack on Tuesday with the children engaged in a voting method to decide on the flavours.

“I think it will change colour”

“i think it will disappear”

All these activities are expanded from the children’s  learning interest in stories and books. These will be added to the current learning wall which is still a major interest with the children. Some children have been showing an interest in non fiction books such as the Above and below, while others revisited a previous experience of the birds outside using an app to monitor which birds are lose by. They gathered images to create a tally chart to record which birds were close by.

In the forest this week the children enjoyed a hot cheese and tomato pizza along with hot chocolate drink or water to keep their bodies warm especially with the weather we had that day. Lots of imaginative play occurred with the children engaging well with each other sharing ideas. Some children decided to worked together to tidy up the wooded area piling up all the fallen leaves and sticks. A group created their own fire area discussing and recalling how to be safe around the fire.

We had a lovely visited from a couple of P6 students who came to visit the nursery to give a talk and a power point  all about being safe on the roads. This links well into the Road Safety campaign in the school and the nursery demonstrated a good understanding from their walks back from the forest on being safe around the roads.

On Friday the children have been very busy starting their journey of their Christmas enterprise project, showing their creative and developing skills using their hand and eye co-ordination. Over the coming weeks more information on this project will be passed onto you.

With the change of season and varied weather  ☔️❄️🥶, please remember to provide your child with welly boots, waterproof clothing, hat, gloves 🧤, scarf🧣 and at least 2 full changes of clothes in your child’s bag (remember the…🧦 🧦🩲🩲 )

Newport Nursery Blog 13.11.23-17.11.23

Good evening everyone!

What a busy week we have all experienced.

On Monday, our Christmas interest has most definitely begun with an announcement linked with a home experience. ‘I’ve got Christmas music in my car.’ ‘I know Jingle Bells but I don’t know the other Christmas songs.’

This led to learning about;

*how to research Christmas songs using the iPad (technical issues) then the PC

*listening to, watching and participating in Christmas song exploration on the Smartboard

https://youth.be/9iLcWuxIQ4?feature=shared

*sharing our likes and dislikes relating to Christmas songs

*confidently ask and answer questions about our beliefs and family traditions…’What do you leave out for 🎅🏽🦌🦌🦌🛷 on Christmas Eve?’ What do you put at the top of your Christmas 🎄?

*applying our technology skills to operate and play the Christmas CD in the music area

*performing Christmas songs (indoors and out) as a small group and independently demonstrating rhythm using untuned percussion instruments and sharing song words and the different versions we know

*exploring the Christmas Tree Decoration game on Topmarks (selecting, dragging, dropping, mouse control, hand eye coordination).

*apply our gross motor skills and skill of space sharing and communication to jump in puddles

*develop our skill and interest in simple coding using the Beebots (this has been generated by our Bear Hunt adventures. Through our Beebot experiences, we were learning to;

*clearly share our ideas with a friend using a map  (‘I’m going to get it to the shop’)

*apply our knowledge of direction to make Beebot go.

*to use the iPad to explore the Beebot app and select a range of challenges

*develop our skills in giving directional instructions

On Tuesday, we were learning to;

*🍕👍🏼🍕👎🏼display our lunch choices on a table by recording our name or drawing a picture.

*observe and discuss the weather and apply our self help skills to get appropriately dressed with waterproofs and wellyboots.

*risk assess our movements and resources in the garden.

*undertake a group Gummy Bear science activity linked with our interest in Bears (following on from We’re Going on. Bear Hunt), predicting what will happen to the sweets by Friday.

*participate as a group to share in a range of familiar and less familiar rhymes and songs shared by our special guest, ‘Reading Rabbit.’

*listen to, discuss, predict and share word patterns heard in ‘Reading Rabbit’s traditional story choice…’Goldilocks and the Three Bears.’

On Wednesday, at Forest Kindergarten we were learning to;

*use some of our Signalong knowledge to share our Forest Kindergarten Charter

*continue our group interest from last week to create and use our own role play fire circle. ‘We are the teachers, you need to help us get the sticks.’ ‘We stay in the fire square and no children are allowed in this circle.’

*play a new type of Tig called ‘Toilet Tig,’ and with practice and through discussion we were able to teach others the rules of the game

*safely cook mallows over the fire, discussing our likes and dislikes

*participate in a Bear Hunt Activity requested by a friend and successfully explored our forest spaces and beyond, suggesting sounds and recalling words patterns as we went.

*use sticks as tools to make marks on the forest floor and describing our movements

*discuss how we were feeling after we were exercising

*independently and with an adult explore a range of books

*take time to use our senses to explore our forest space at different heights

On Thursday, we were learning to;

*explore a range of books using a range of online stories available on the Top Marks site, following the text and turning the pages using our hand eye coordination

*lead or interact in small world  and imaginative play using the Lego, Block area and loose parts as well as in the home corner

*operate our remote control cars and apply our investigative skills to move other vehicles and items using the force of our remote control car

*explore the Beebot community map to explore sounds and letters on each of the buildings

*assess our large grassy garden and decide the type of clothing we would need to wear

*apply our resilience and team work to make our wheeled trikes, bikes and scooters to move on the grass

Week beginning 6th November

This week learning has been …….. discovering, researching, creating, imagining, experimenting, being responsible and helping.

We are learning to be responsible, safe and respectful. Lots of us are volunteering to help make snack, clean up our spills and practicing our tidying up skills. If we use it, we know we need to put it back. (Although we are still finding it tricky in the art area when we are busy creating masterpieces).

Winter Tidy up:

Outside this week we have been washing down the outside resources and making the garden area nice and tidy after the recent storms. We gathered buckets of warm soapy water and had fun working together as a team using our water play skills to make everything sparkly and clean.

“We’re Going On A Bear Hunt”

Carrying on from last week we have been “Going on a Bear Hunt “. Using the story to help us retell the story through role play. Showing that we are continuing to engage with our learning wall. Exploring different ways to listen to, and tell stories. Lots of rhyming, sequencing and discovering how we can act out different characters.

Outside, Mrs Wilson and some of the children created an activity where they had to “go on a bear hunt” around the garden to find all the hidden bears. SSH! Don’t tell the next person where they’re hiding! 🐻

Diwali

We are talking about and exploring Diwali this week. Looking at and researching what Diwali is and how people celebrate it.
Some of us have been drawing around our hands and designing patterns on them with different colourful beads. Lots of bright Diwali colours in the art area to inspire our pictures, paintings and creations.

We participated in discussions around what foods people enjoy during Diwali feasts and how they might celebrate.

Forest School

This week there was only a few of us. Some of us built our own campfire, gathering sticks and leaves for our fire and logs to create the fire square. Some were catching leaves as they fell from the trees, before they reached the ground. We had French toast on the fire for snack and listened to see if we recognised the birds.

Telescopes have been a big interest this week, with the children exploring different ways to make them. Sharing resources and practicing our turn taking skills, lots of negotiating and discussions. Some of us used the telescopes in our role play as pirates and some of us used them to investigate the playroom more closely.

Now that the weather has most definitely turned, we are asking that all children who attend forest on Wednesdays to come with weather appropriate layers.

Writing Table

Lots of interest in writing and practicing our new words. Sounding out each and working out which letter is needed.

Design & Build

The block area has been popular this week too, with children getting creative and designing very intricate buildings and cities! We can talk about the shapes we used and why we positioned them in certain places. Showing our understanding of shape, design and positional language.

Mrs Foulis

This week sees Mrs Foulis leaving us for pastures new. We have all enjoyed the fun and games, and we will miss you. We wish you luck in your new role ☺️

In-service Day

Friday 10th November the nursery will be closed to the children. Back to normal on Monday 13th November.

Absences

We are grateful for absences noted on Seesaw but can we ask that you also contact the school office to log them. This just ensures all absences are logged correctly.

Loose Parts

We are always in need of replenishing our loose parts in nursery. If you are out and about on walks, or are planning to recycle items, can we ask that you think of us first please 😃

Here is some of the items we are looking for:

Conkers, stones, shells, tea cups, sticks, picture frames, plates, anything you think might be of used in nursery.
We are also on the lookout for two of kitchen chairs, if anyone is getting rid of them. We are looking to develop a new area in the playroom.

Phew what a busy week!

Enjoy your weekend everyone and we’ll see you on Monday 😃
