The teaching of handwriting is built on children’s gross and fine motor development.  Children need to be ready to write.

Pre-Handwriting – Development Continuim

Once children have moved their way through the Pre-Handwriting Developmental Continuum and are ready for formal handwriting instruction, the following materials can be used as support:

It is important that parents understand the importance of foundational writing skills, recognising that for the majority of children, handwriting will not be “automatic” until the middle of primary school.

Pupils will be supported to develop fluent, legible handwriting and understand the importance of good presentation in order to engage a reader.  Most pupils will transition into linked script but some may not.
