Welcome to our weekly family and community communication that provides a Headteacher overview of the weeks events and other school-based information.

The week that’s been…

Another week has been and gone but life continues to be busy here in KHS.

This week, we have had young people out on DofE expeditions, visit to QM Hospital in Dunfermline, visit to Jupiter Art Land, Football tournaments, Hyrox competitions and maths challenges just to name a few! You can read most of these events on our school blog.

In school, I met with our Pupil Leadership Team on Monday. It was a pleasure to speak to them and listen to what was going well for the S6 leadership team and to listen to areas they feel we need to support further. It was also great to discuss with them our School Improvement Plan (SIP) for this session and take onboard their ideas too. I also met with our School Improvement Group Pupil committee to hear their ideas too. I will be putting this together in our updated SIP and I will share with you on Monday for your views also. The young people were amazing and had many great ideas to support young people in KHS.

I have also been around many classes this week and have been down supporting our PE department and learners as we moved to a new one system to support with collecting phones from learners before entering the PE changing rooms.

We also had an assembly for S6 on Monday, looking at their volunteering time in school and out. S1’s took part in a show called ‘Material World: Engineering for the Future’ during period 2 today in school. They learned about many different areas of STEM and how this is part of their life. S2 were also involved in an assembly today that was led by the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative Scotland. All our S2’s will take part in this through their Citizenship period this year.

A reminder that we are making changes to our Guidance and Support structure following the October break. Thank you for sharing your views. We will pull key themes from this together and share them with you in due course.

Our key principles around this change are:

• To ensure optimal communication with families and key partners so that a school-based Team Around the Child exists for every young person
• To provide consistency of support for young people and families
• To allow Guidance and Support staff more to engage in more meaningful contact with young people across their caseloads, with renewed focus on attainment and attendance

Over recent weeks, we have been gathering the views of the school community about house names, with a view to either re-instating an old house name for the fourth house or changing the names based on the feedback.

We are in the process now of advertising for 2 new PT Guidance posts, working out the new classes and responsibilities for our Guidance team and new houses. Information will be shared with you before the end of term.

S4-6 tracking reports are now live through Progress / Didbook. You should have received and email outlining how to access this for your child. S4 Parent / Carer evening takes place on Tuesday 6th October.

Lastly, there is an updated Key Information document to support you with key information and support.

The week ahead…

Next week, teachers will continue learning conversations with S1-3 learners in preparation for their tracking reports due to families on 9th October.

On Monday, I will share with you our School Improvement Plan, Standards and Quality Report, Pupil Equity Fund plan and seek your views around this (we asked for views in June also).

We have our Ready, Steady KHS transition event for P7 learners on Tuesday in the assembly hall.

On Wednesday it’s school photo day – an email has been shared with families about this.
