Dear Parent / Carer,
Welcome to our weekly family and community communication that provides a Headteacher overview of the weeks events and other school-based information.
The week that’s been…
It’s been another fantastic week here in KHS as our learners continue to get back into our school routines and learning!
Over the course of this week, I have been out and about around school, popping in and out of classes across the school.
Today I visited all S1 and S2 classes with Mrs Gibb (Year Head S1) and Mr Young (Year Head S2). It was great to see and hear about how well our young people were getting on in class with the various lessons taking place. S1 were across the school in Social Subjects, English, Languages, Art and Science. S2 were across Science, English, Digital Skills, DET and Music. As we went around the classes, we spoke to learners and checked on school uniform. Well done to all learners for their attitude to learning and commitment to KHS!
Over the course of this week, S1 have been going it alone, finding their classes and making new friends along the way. Our S6 buddies and many other learners have been supporting them along the way. From Monday, S1 will now leave classes and head for break / lunch at the same time as all other learners.
S5 and S6 had assemblies on Thursday focussed on the S5 lift off programme and UCAS for those who are applying to University this session.
On Thursday we had our first PACK (parent council) meeting of the session. We heard from our Pupil Leadership team on their return to school and how school has settled on our return. Mrs Gibb spoke to PACK about our proposed changes to Guidance and Support and I delivered some updates about KHS now and in the future. Key points to note as follows:
Views shared from parents / carers about our proposed changes included – relationships and changes to PTG from our senior pupils
Timing for S4 of the changes before S4 prelims
Updates from me included: Results, Staffing, Budget, Buses, Pupil Leadership and our family fun day.
A reminder that we are making changes to our Guidance and Support structure following the October break. Thank you for sharing your views. We will pull key themes from this together and share them with you in due course.
Our key principles around this change are:
- To ensure optimal communication with families and key partners so that a school-based Team Around the Child exists for every young person
- To provide consistency of support for young people and families
- To allow Guidance and Support staff more to engage in more meaningful contact with young people across their caseloads, with renewed focus on attainment and attendance
The week ahead…
Next week we have:
- S1 Parent / Carer English / Maths info evening on Thursday 3rd September 6pm – 7pm
- KHS Community and family fun day – Sunday 6th September -information has been shared over the summer and on our website / X / Facebook – 11am – 3pm
I hope you have a great weekend when it comes!
Best wishes,
Chris McKay
