Rector’s Log 05/09/25

Dear Parent / Carer,

Welcome to this weeks Rector’s Log. I hope you and your family are doing well!

The week that’s been…

Another great week here at KHS and lots going on to support and educate our amazing young people!

Earlier in the week, I had the opportunity to speak to our new S3 learning ambassadors. The learning ambassadors will form a key group within the school, supporting our improvement journey as well as supporting other learners. If you are keen to read more about this, read about wellbeing and more, please access our blog – click here.

On Tuesday evening, several families of our new S1, joined by our young people, had the opportunity to come into KHS and hear from our English and Maths faculties about what S1 are learning in class. The evening provided an opportunity for families to engage with key staff, find out more about what was happening in class and to ask any burning questions that they had about life at KHS. Thank you to all families and young people who attended a very informative evening!

On Thursday, parents / carers had the opportunity to attend the first PACK meeting of the session online. The meeting contained updates from me, discussion around celebrating success, increasing family engagement and answering concerns from parents / carers. If you couldn’t make it or haven’t had the opportunity to come along yet, we hope to see you at the next meeting in Term 2. Minutes from the meeting will be shared in due course.

Today, I spent time popping in and out of a range of classes speaking to young people and teachers. As always, it was great to see a lot of productive work, engagement and the odd bit of fun!

Over the course of last session, colleagues and young people in school developed a KHS Learning Standard. Colleagues in our Learning, Teaching and Assessment improvement group were tasked with developing this based on feedback from families, young people and teachers. Young people were also involved in this and helped to develop a shared understanding of this standard. I have attached the KHS Learning Standard to this email and will seek your views over the coming weeks. As you will see, the focus for the Learning Standard is based around everyone’s roles and bringing our core value of community to underpin this.

A few updates from Mrs Gibb DHT (Support):

Our anti-bullying policy was last updated in September 2023. It is now time to review this, and we would seek your views around this policy. If you are able, please can we ask you to feedback using the form sent out on “Groupcall”.

Secondly, following the return to school and settling into school life, we are re-introducing our late-coming process. Please find a letter updating families on this.

Lastly, I would ask that young people and families do not park or walk across the staff car parks around the school unless agreed by Senior Leaders in school. There are clear signs around the school ground directing young people not to pass through these areas. It is important that young people do not walk through the car parks as a short cut. I would ask for your support with this and ask you to discuss with your child(ren).

The week ahead…

Next week, young people and families in S4 are invited into KHS on Thursday evening to hear from Mrs Hume (DHT, Year Head S4) and other colleagues about the supports on offer for S4 as they prepare for SQA examinations in May. It also provides an opportunity for families to speak to staff and ask questions. Further information will be shared at the beginning of the week.

A little further ahead, on Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th September we will be undertaking an Extended Learning Partnership with colleagues from Fife Council and beyond coming to support us through a range of classroom observations, professional discussions and focus groups to validate where we are in our school improvement journey. Information will be shared with you next week about how you can be involved and share your views!

Finally, I hope you have a great weekend – whatever you’re up to!

Best wishes,

Chris McKay
