Rector’s Log 25/04/25

Dear Parent / Carer,

Welcome to this weeks Rector’s Log. I hope you and your family are doing well!

The week that’s been…

It has been great a first week back in KHS and always a real pleasure to see our young people, colleagues, families and wider partners after a restful and enjoyable holiday.

The focus this week has been on ensuring a positive and productive return to school for all, as well as finishing off key tasks and learning for those in S4-6 who are undertaking their SQA examinations.

On Tuesday, our S6 leavers enjoyed a final day in KHS, getting shirts signed and taking part in last day activities. We also held a wee ceremony with families in the library, with some speeches by Mrs Davidson and our Head Boy and Girl. We were also handing out school service certificates and Saltire awards to many of our S5s who have played a huge part in the life of our school over their 6 years! Most S6s then took part in a leavers activity on Wednesday to mark the end of their formal time with us. We wish all our leavers the very best for the future. They are, and have been, a credit to the school, families and themselves. Usque Conabor!

On Wednesday, we also welcomed some of our S3 learners taking on the role of Prefect, in the absence of the S6 team. The group have done exceptionally well over the past few days, and we are really grateful to them for taking up this leadership role. We wish them the best over the next few weeks.

Today marked the start of the SQA examinations with National 5 and Higher Computing Science examinations taking place for a relatively select group of learners. Despite the nerves, all were keen to get started and gave of their best. Next week sees the SQA examinations continuing with Music, Geography and Chemistry to name a few. Best of luck to all our learners undertaking their examinations over the coming weeks.

As always, you can read more about all the goings on in our blog.

A wee update from Ms Black and our Supported Learning department:

“Great to be back and into our learning and routines.   To share some out the classroom learning, SLD2 were taking part in Outdoor Learning and some very creative and well thought out den building was going on.  Well done to Zander and Nathan for brilliant teamwork in creating your shelter and look out for photos on our Socials.  As well as our PE lessons we have also been continuing with our cricket sessions with Cricket Scotland and Falkland Cricket, thank you we are loving the learning and experiences.  Learners could identify skills that had improved and how that had been achieved, great to hear.  There was also a discussion around the transferrable skills that apply in other areas of learning.

We have a few special achievements to celebrate.  Congratulations to Nathan for receiving his Chief Scout award.  You have worked very hard for this Nathan and shown great commitment; we are super proud.  Big congratulations go as well to Liam, Dylan, Levi and D for their school award; creating a band, writing your own material, devising covers, organising rehearsals and then performing your first public gig is a huge achievement and shows great skills and we are very proud of you all too.  It is great to hear about our learners’ wider achievements, you are all amazing.  Look out for photos on Socials!”

House Point totals for the week and session so far are as below:

This weeks total:
Adam Smith – 26
Carlyle – 54
Oswald – 17

Overall total:
Adam Smith – 3044
Carlyle – 3111
Oswald – 3450

Well done to all!

Lastly, a few young people in S4 are part of our ‘Meaningful May’ programme, targeted at supporting those young people who have very few, or no National 5 examinations. A letter is available for transparency. This letter has been sent to families that this applies to.

In addition, over the first two weeks of study leave, some young people will be invited in to school to complete SQA units. We would appreciate your support in checking emails and sending young people into school if required.

The week ahead…

Next week we have SQA examinations continuing for learners in S4-6.

We also have Friends of Kirkcaldy High meeting taking place on Tuesday via Zoom.

Finally, a brief note to say that the next PACK meeting will take place on 13th May and not 5th May as outlined in the End of Term letter.

I hope you and your family have a great weekend!

Best wishes,

Chris McKay
