Rector’s Log 14/03/25

Dear Parent / Carer,

Welcome to this weeks Rector’s Log. I hope you and your family are doing well!

The week that’s been…

The weeks are flying past and I can’t believe that it’s the middle of March already! School is very busy and there is always lots going on…

Last Friday, Friends of Kirkcaldy High School (FoKHS) hosted their annual ceilidh in our assembly hall. It was a fantastic occasion with lots of fun and energy on show – and fantastic ceilidh dancing taking place too. The night was enjoyed by all and was a great success, with over £2500 raised in profit! A huge thanks to FoKHS for their ongoing support and dedication to our community.

Over the course of this week, it has been great to speak to our young people in and out of classes. Although school is very busy, our young people continue to enjoy their learning and extra-curricular opportunities. From the Rights group to nurture and maths support, there is always something on.

We have also been providing opportunities for learners in S4-6 with study support, taking place at lunches, after school and on Saturday mornings too. Well done to all those being pro-active and attending for the support. A special thanks to our teachers who go above and beyond to support learners all year round.

Mrs Davidson has asked me to share that the SQA ‘Your Exams’ publication will be online this year.  Learners in S4-6 will have an SQA assembly with Mrs Davidson and our Chief Invigilator, Ms Maloney on Friday, 4th April. Study leave begins for all S4-6 on Thursday 24th April to Friday 30th May inclusive.

Mrs Hume has also asked that I share our KHS Study Skills Support booklet packed full of key information for all subjects and courses. This resource has been specifically prepared to support both pupils and parents / carers with studying and exam preparation. In the booklet you will find some general study advice as well as links to key revision methods. Throughout the booklet you will find detailed information for each subject as well as more targeted links.

We are currently reviewing our staffing for next session and will be seeking to ensure that we are fully staffed for next Session. We currently have an advert for PTC Science with Physics as Mr Fleming (current PTC Science) is looking forward to a long a healthy retirement at the end of this session.

Mrs Little, PT Raising Attainment and Teacher of PE, commences her maternity leave today, with Ms Akers taking on the role of PT Raising Attainment from Monday. We wish Mrs Little and family all the best.

We currently have 2 members of our Guidance team off, Mrs Sim and Mr Walsh. If you or your child require any support or guidance, please contact the relevant year head for your child. This information can be found in our Key Information booklet on our website.

As always, you can read more about all the goings on in our blog.

A wee update from Ms Black and our Supported Learning department:

“Learners from S2 and senior phase joined our Horticulturists to work with pupils from outwith KHS to plant new trees in Dunnikier Estate.  Some lovely peer to peer support and direction from our more experienced gardeners passing on their skills and knowledge.

In the classroom SLD2 have been working on Geometry in particular angles and verbs.  In SLD1 there was quite an adventure brewing with Mr Jones as ships were built and a pirate adventure was about to commence!

As with the rest of KHS Seniors, we have been completing qualification work and setting ourselves up for new timetables and next steps in our learning.  Letters have gone out regards College School Partnership and we look forward to seeing families in school to share more about this.

Huge congratulations to Jake who is our Mathematician of the Week and should be very proud of his attitude and achievements and to Seanine for achieving her Forest School qualification, the first Supported Learning pupil to do so, congratulations!”

House Point totals for the week and session so far are as below:

This weeks total:
Adam Smith – 39
Carlyle – 44

Overall total:

Well done to all!

The week ahead…

Next week, we have our last parent / carer evening of the session for young people in S3 on Tuesday. Progress reports for S3 will be available to view on Monday from our reporting platform, didbook, ahead of this evening. Progress reports for S1 and S2 will be available for parents / carers to view next Friday.

The sun appears to be out, so I hope you get an opportunity to enjoy it over the weekend.

Best wishes,
