Rector’s Log 07/03/25

Dear Parent / Carer,

Welcome to this weeks Rector’s Log. I hope you and your family are doing well!

The week that’s been…

It continues to be very busy in KHS with all manner of events, learning and extra-curricular activities taking place.

Yesterday, our amazing English faculty celebrated world book day in style, with all of our colleagues in the faculty joining in by dressing up as some of their favourite characters from the world of literature! Well done to the team for getting in to the spirit and bringing word to life!

On Wednesday, representatives from the In2Med charity came to KHS to do a presentation for interested S4-6 pupils who are considering applying for nursing or medicine after their time at KHS.

Young people heard from some current medical and nursing students from Dundee University who delivered a session on how to apply for medicine/nursing and what their early years studying will be like.

Yesterday, 7 of our senior students took part in their Career Ready graduation. With schools from across Fife, they listened to speeches from author Gavin Oattes, as well as senior management from Diageo, the Old Course Hotel, and Fife Council, plus a recorded message from the Minister of Higher and Further Education Graeme Dey. Each learner has received a graduation certificate and are now enrolled in the Alumni Scheme which provides them with a wide network of industry specific contacts and job/apprenticeship opportunities.

As always, you can read more about all the goings on in our blog.

For learners in S4-6, study leave is due to commence on Thursday 24th April and finish on Friday 30th May 2025. More details will be shared before the Easter break regarding Easter study sessions, plans for S4 young people not undertaking National 5 qualifications and other relevant updates.

A wee update from Ms Black and our Supported Learning department:

“A very busy week in Supported Learning and it had a celebratory feel.  In the senior classes we have had many learners complete their National 3 qualifications in Maths and English subjects this week and they were immediately keen to look towards their National 4s, great attitudes.   Our National 5 Maths learners are finishing learning and working hard at preparing for their exams.

Other learners’ high points from the week include “getting better in Badminton” and enjoying his PE (Kacper), “improved axe skills” whilst chopping wood in N4 Horticulture and “using my stander” (Logan).

Many of our learners took part in World Book Day related learning and one young person came up with the fantastic idea to create a computer game featuring favourite books across our team.  Our weekly Get Together became the scene of the World Premier and we were all so impressed at the ideas, the details and the execution.  It’s a fantastic piece of work and the attitude and skills that took to create it are impressive.  We have shared a still to our Socials and look forward to sharing game play in due course.  Amazing job Zander!”

House Point totals for the week and session so far are as below:

This weeks total:
Adam Smith – 56
Carlyle – 52
Oswald – 84

Overall total:
Adam Smith – 2581
Carlyle – 2701
Oswald – 2742

Well done to all!

The week ahead…

Next week, learning continues for all with young people in S4-6 continuing work towards their national qualifications through practicals, assignments and in class learning. There are a range od study supports on offer, and I would encourage learners to attend these sessions.

Colleagues will take part in our next collegiate activity session on Thursday, focussing on our school improvement through School Improvement Groups.

I hope you have a great weekend.

Best wishes,

Chris McKay
