Dear Parent / Carer,
Welcome to this weeks Rector’s Log. I hope you and your family are doing well!
The week that’s been…
What a busy and fruitful week here at KHS! Lots going on, but lots of opportunities for young people and families too.
On Monday, I met with all year groups through assemblies to invite all young people to help us understand what is unique about KHS, linking into our school vision and values. Over the coming weeks, learners will get the opportunity to share their views on our vision and values through an online survey in Social Education. I look forward to sharing this with our community in due course.
For S2/4/5 it was also an opportunity to share information about there upcoming course choices, taking them through the process and what supports are on offer. On Monday evening, we also had the opportunity to welcome families into KHS to share information around course choices and provide an opportunity for families to meet teachers from all subject areas to find out more about the many opportunities that young people have here at KHS.
On Wednesday, young people in S2/4/6 took part in in the Equally Safe at School survey. This survey provided young people with the opportunity to share their views about how they feel in school. Following the survey, young people will then take part in the initiative through Social Education. This initiative aims to help prevent and eradiate violence against women and girls, but it is also a message of promoting equalities and support for all learners. Learners in S2/4/6 last year undertook the same initiative and were very positive about their experiences.
Over this week, we have had young people taking part in the Fife Festival of Music. It has been great to speak with young people involved and hear about their very positive and fun experiences. Congratulations must go to the Wind Band who achieved Gold at the festival alongside some of our young people achieving some great individual success. Well done to all involved and a huge thanks to the music team for their ongoing support to our musicians!
Today, I had a wee break in my diary that allowed me to get round all classes and speak to young people and colleagues. I am absolutely amazed at the fantastic learning opportunities taking place across the school, with high levels of engagement and enjoyment evident. Our community really is incredible and I am very proud of all of our young people and staff who work incredibly hard to ensure they get the success their potential and talents deserve.
As always, you can read more about all the goings on in our blog.
A wee update from Ms Black and our Supported Learning department:
In SLD1 learners were making pizza in Home Economics and were able to share the skills that they learnt doing this. We do have photos to share which will be added to our blog which is good as I’m not sure any pizza made it home for you to see! They were eaten fairly quickly which is testament to how tasty they were. They have also been working on their Geography skills with Mr Broadway and were identifying cities around Scotland.
SLD3 also had a geography focus completing work on both their Scottish Studies and Travel and Tourism. They should be able to share about Scotland’s canals and why we have the Falkirk Wheel as well as looking at comparing tourism around Scotland and in particular why and how we might travel to a place of our choice. Learners in S3/4 also completed next sections in the Maths qualifications and took part in planning their next steps.
Across year groups we have had more discussions around our learning decisions for next session and we will begin with final coursing for S2, 4 and 5s with S2 making theirs on Monday and Tuesday. Thank you to families that shared events that are important to them, and we would like to share in marking or celebrating these special occasions, we have added them to our department calendar.
House Point totals for the week and session so far are as below:
This weeks total:
Adam Smith – 38
Carlyle – 3
Oswald – 2
Overall total:
Adam Smith – 2374
Carlyle – 2514
Oswald – 2471
Well done to all!
Attached to this groupcall you will find letters from Maria Lloyd (Head of Service for Secondary Schools) to parents / carers and young people of S4-6 outlining the changes to SQA dates and times. Moreover, I would signpost families and young people to our well-being Padlet, for help and support around several well-being issues.
The week ahead…
Next week is a short week for learners with School closing on Tuesday for the February break. School will close at 3.25pm on Tuesday and re-open for young people at the usual time on Monday 17th February.
On Wednesday, staff will be undertaking the 4th INSET day of the year where we will focus on Project Based Learning, School Improvement and Well-being.
On Monday 17th and Tuesday 18th February, we will be welcoming colleagues from across Fife Education to support us with a review around Leadership of Change. I will update families through the Rector’s Log.
There will be no Rector’s Log next week due to the short week.
I hope you have a great weekend.
Best wishes,
Chris McKay
