Rector’s Log 15/12/23

Welcome to this weeks Rector’s log. This will be the last Rector’s log of the term. The next Rector’s log will be sent on Friday 12th January 2024. I hope you and your family are doing well.

The week that’s been…

It has been another busy and fast-paced week with many opportunities and challenges along the way!

This week, our assessment window continued for young people in S4-6, with young people in S4 completing a range subject assessments in the assembly hall. These included: Chemistry, Art, Graph Comm, History, Computing, Music Tech, Practical Cookery, RMPS, French, Design and Manufacture, Woodwork, Drama, Geography, Spanish, Admin and Applications of maths. S5/6 continued with their assessments also, mostly completed through class where applicable. Again, our young people have dug deep and showed real character and determination. Well done to all!

On Wednesday, our Supported Learners organised their annual Christmas Fayre. The event took place in our IT hub and was very well attended by families, young people and staff. There was a range of stalls from tombola through to guessing the birthday of a cuddly toy. It was wonderful to see the effort and care taken by our supported learners in ensuring that the Fayre was a great success. Thank you to our staff who helped to organise and support the event with the young people. Thank you to all families who managed in for the event. Lastly, special thanks to all the young people who helped to organise and lead the event!

Yesterday, I got the opportunity to join young people in S3 who had just completed their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award expedition. Both groups presented to their peers and staff on the expedition, the trials and tribulations of it and how they managed to overcome bad weather, getting lost and some really messy tents! I was very impressed by the presentations, but even more impressed at the determination, resilience, teamwork and humour with which the groups showed through the expedition and presentations. Well done to all, an amazing achievement! Thank you to all staff involved in supporting too.

As you will be aware, we suffered some terrible vandalism last weekend. It was unexpected and quite disheartening but we are very grateful for your support and that of the young people. I would like to thank our community for your support, following my email to you on Sunday. It has meant a great deal to us.

The week ahead…

Overall, the school is looking very festive and we are looking forward to our last (half) week next week.

Next week, young people can wear a festive accessory each day, whether this is a Christmas Jumper or something a little less loud! Full school uniform is still expected on Monday and Tuesday (Shirt, Tie etc.). Wednesday is a non-uniform day. As ever, young people can give a donation to support local charities, if they are able to do so.

On Tuesday, our Christmas Fayre and Christmas concert take place. The Christmas Fayre will start at 5.30pm (Stalls setting up from 4.30pm), with the Christmas Concert due to begin at 6.30pm. Mrs Duckett has asked me to include the following for you:

Our Christmas Concert will take place next Tuesday 19th December in the evening at 6:30pm. Musicians from all year groups have been busy preparing for weeks and rehearsals are sounding fabulous. The theme is Film and Musicals! All tickets have now been allocated to those taking part, friends, family and guests of KHS. If you would like a ticket and haven’t got one yet, please get in touch with Mrs Duckett as soon as possible.

School closes next Wednesday at 3.15pm for young people and reopens on Thursday 4th January 2024, at the usual time.

I hope you and your family have a fantastic Festive break and a happy new year with those that you love.

Best wishes,

Chris McKay
