Respect for Self, Others, and Learning

Rector’s Log 22/09/23

Welcome to this weeks Rectors log, I hope you and your family are doing well…

The week that’s been…

It’s been a very busy week here at KHS and lots of exciting learning and opportunities for our young people.

Our jetsetters returned from Washington on Sunday after numerous delays and cancellations with flights. Although the dealt with some adversity in travelling, their resilience and character shown through. From speaking to some who attended, a fantastic time was had by all and the learning experience beyond the classroom hopefully helps bring some of their work to life! Thank you to families, young people and staff who supported and led this amazing experience for our young people.

The second half of the S1 year group had their outdoor experience at Fordell Firs Monday through to Wednesday this week. Although the weather was very Autumnal, the spirits of the young people and the house leaders supporting them were very high. Again, the group enjoyed a lot of varied activities and developed a range of skills in the process. Well done to all and thank you to those staff who supported our young people.

On Tuesday we had some young people in S5 attend their first Lift Off session, working with Abertay University. The session was productive and the young people gained a good understanding of Higher Education.

We also had a large group of over 60 S6 attend the UCAS convention at Rothes hall in Glenrothes. The group learned about all things related to UCAS from how to apply through to personal statements and beyond. I have also been told that the lunch was excellent! Again, thank you to young people and staff who attended.

A small apology from me as I had informed you last week about reports but didn’t state a year group. Parents / carers of S4-6 young people will have received information about accessing reports online today. For Parents / Carers of young people in S1-3, reports will be live on Friday 6th October.

Parent / Carer Evening for S4 will take place on Tuesday 3rd October. The PEBS system went live on Tuesday and I hope you have managed to arrange appointments. Please get in touch if you have any issues related to the reports or S4 Parent / Carer Evening.

The week ahead…

You will have received an e-mail from Fife Council yesterday / today regarding the proposed Strike action by education based single status staff. At the moment, we expect KHS to be closed to pupils next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. This means, that learning will move to online over these 3 days. Information about what your child can expect will be sent to you on Monday.

For those young people undertaking study through the School College Partnership model, college will continue to operate as normal on Tuesday and Thursday, so young people should attend college.

There are some out of school excursions also due to take place next week. The teacher leading these will be in touch with young people and you to let you know if these are not going ahead.

Lastly, our confirmed School Improvement Plan for this session and Standards and Quality Report for last session will be available on our website from Monday. Thank you for the feedback provided.

Best wishes,

Chris McKay
