Rector’s Log 05/05/23

Welcome to this weeks Rector’s Log, I hope you and your family are well.

The week that’s been…

As you will be aware, a group of S3 students, supported by staff, left us on Saturday for the Battlefields of France and Belgium. Last night, they returned home to KHS following an amazing and emotive experience. All returned safe, with those that I spoke to today telling of the adventure and their experience. My thanks to our staff team who led and supported this trip – Mr Harrower, Miss Osborne, Ms Preece and Mr Naismith.

Following on from the success of our U16 team from last week, our U15 (S3) team followed this up by winning the Fife Schools League cup, beating Woodmill High School 3-1. Another fantastic achievement for our young people and school! Well done to all.

On Wednesday, we held a celebration lunch for Eid-Al-Fitr in Home Economics. Young people and staff celebrated this occasion with each other, trying some new foods and learning more about Ramadan and Eid.

SQA assessments continued this week with History, Mathematics (all levels), Applications of Mathematics Classical Studies and Music. Our young people continue to have a positive and determined attitude to each examination, with a number of young people taking advantage of the Masterclasses offered by their teachers.

We have also had a number of young people in S4/5 taking up the opportunity to complete assessments for their National 4 and other non-examination qualifications. Thank you to Miss Hay and Mrs Hume for continuing to support this group of young people.

Our S3 pupils have been undergoing National Standardised Assessments in Literacy and Numeracy this week, with catch-up assessments taking place next week.

Today I visited a number of S1/2 classes. I am always amazed at the many varied and rich learning experiences offered to our young people. It was also great to see the continued improved standards in uniform and hear about how well all were doing with their learning.

As ever, please find below information from Mrs Whyte regarding DYW:

A lot of pupils will be looking to gain some work experience, this is a great opportunity to give you a flavour of the world of work and ‘try out’ a profession. If this is something, you are interested in there is a form to complete on the padlet. There is also a great opportunity for any S5 pupils who are looking to study medicine.

For anyone looking to leave school there are a number of vacancies on the Padlet including – apprenticeships in Admin, at Scotrail, Exxon, Babcock and Sky Television advertised. As well as a range of part and full time jobs.

Lastly, I have been informed by a parent that their child had a tick on their arm. They believe that this was picked up in the woods around our school. Can I ask you to make your child(ren) aware of this and please remain vigilant.

The week ahead…

Monday is a bank holiday to celebrate the King’s Coronation. School will be closed to all young people on Monday 8th May and will reopen on Tuesday 9th May. Next week, SQA examinations continue from Tuesday. Masterclasses continue to support young people with final preparations for their examinations.

The next Parent Council meeting is due to take place on Tuesday 23rd May 2023 at 6pm online. Agenda and link will be sent to all parents / carers the week before. All parents / carers are welcome.

I hope you have an enjoyable (long) weekend

Best wishes

Chris McKay
