Rector’s Log 5/5/17

Dear Parent/Carer

I hope you are well. It’s been a short week with the May Day Public Holiday and the school being closed to pupils yesterday for an In-Service Training day. This was timed by the Council to coincide with the Local Government Elections and it means that there will be no In-Service Day in June this year. Monday June 5 is a Public Holiday and the term ends with a half day closure on Thursday 29 June.

The SQA exams started this week with Design and Manufacture on Tuesday, Spanish on Wednesday, Latin and Music yesterday and Maths today. I’m pleased to say that our candidates are off to a very good start. All are reminded of the “masterclass” arrangements which apply to the day before each exam. They are very welcome in school to do some last minute revision, we have made staff available to support.

On Wednesday evening, our U13 football team competed well in the Scottish Shield final played at Stenhousemuir FC. Unfortunately, after losing early goals they could not overcome a strong and skilful Lourdes Secondary from Glasgow, who were 3-0 winners. Well done to them. I am immensely proud of the KHS boys, they are a credit to the school. Over 300 schools entered and to make the final is a massive achievement … our first national final in 36 years. I must also congratulate coaches Mr English and Mr I’Anson and thank our special shirt sponsors Glen Fisheries.

Today, our Go4SET Science team competed in the “STEM” competition at Fife College and I am delighted to say that they won the “Best Teamwork” Trophy. Many thanks to Brand-Rex Ltd of Glenrothes for their excellent support.

Next week’s SQA exams are Chemistry on Monday, History on Tuesday, Graphic Communication on Wednesday and English on Thursday and Friday.

I’m really looking forward to Monday evening, when Morgan Faulds and Cara Hayes, our Fife Champion public speakers take part in the Crown Office Procurator Fiscal Service national semi-final at Dundee Sheriff Court, when they take on Robert Gordon’s College, Aberdeen. Best of luck to the girls.

Also next week it will be great to welcome the P7 pupils who will be joining us as new S1 from August when we host our “STEP UP” Enterprise Competition on Tuesday and Wednesday. The week ends with another primary liaison event … our P7 Sports Day on Friday. We have accepted a large number of placing requests this week and have written to those concerned. Any family interested in an enrolment from August should be in touch right away as we are currently putting together the new class lists. We now have limited spaces available.

As you will know, Activities Day will take place on Friday 19th May.  Your son/daughter will have received their Gold, Silver or Bronze ticket during tutor time this morning which in turn will allow them to pick a particular category of activity.  The level of ticket is determined by their behaviour, attitude, attendance and punctuality throughout the course of the session.

I have attached a copy of the Activities Day booklet that gives detailed information about each activity, a copy of the consent form that must be completed and details of the cost involved for each activity.  For the first time any pupil who receives a Free School Meal will not pay for the activity which they have chosen. Many thanks to our sponsors, who have made donations to support this. As you will know, we try to make our school as fair an experience as possible.  Please ensure that your son/daughter completes the consent form and returns the chosen activity sheet on the appropriate day with payment as detailed in the information booklet.

Next week’s hot dish menu is; Monday: Macaroni cheese with chips and vegetables. Tuesday: Red thai chilli beef with noodles and vegetables. Wednesday: Roast turkey with potatoes and vegetables. Thursday: Pork sausage casserole with potatoes and vegetables.. Friday: Breaded fish/steakbake with chips and peas. We also have our pasta, sandwich, soup and salad options too.  Do remember that a cup of home-made soup is available free to all young people at lunchtime.

As always, if we can be of any assistance, please do be in touch.

With best wishes

Derek Allan
