Curriculum Rationale
Kinghorn is an open-plan, friendly, Rights Respecting school located in a growing coastal community. Due to our welcoming ethos, the school has excellent links and enjoys positive relationships with parents/carers and the wider community. Our vision of “Sailing to Success” is well embedded in school life and is underpinned by our Values, which are celebrated throughout the school.
The Main Drivers of our Curriculum
We provide a rich and diverse curriculum influenced by our unique location and environment. We deliver our learning through real life contexts and a progressive, challenging approach which is continually evolving to meet pupils’ needs.
Pupil voice is at the centre of our school ethos, fostering independent thought and responsibility preparing them for the wider world of work. We support and nurture our pupils to develop their literacy and numeracy skills and foster their health & well-being, enabling them to become well rounded individuals.
We have an active and exciting school calendar which provides opportunities for celebrating achievements both in and out of school.
What are we trying to achieve
We strive for all our pupils to feel safe, happy and nurtured. We want our pupils to be confident and motivated, fostering independence as they learn life skills and reach their full potential. It is our desire that the pupils become rounded, questioning individuals that have an awareness of their impact on local and global issues. We aim to provide a progressive curriculum with opportunities for challenge, pace and depth of understanding. Enabling them to become independent, ambitious thinkers. Our aim is to provide a curriculum that has impact and successful outcomes for our learners whilst being enjoyable and memorable.
What needs to happen to achieve this?
Our learning and teaching places the pupils at the centre. The Scottish Government specifies that Literacy, Numeracy and Health & Wellbeing is the responsibility of all, enhanced by the other areas of curriculum: Social Studies, Science, Technologies, Expressive Arts, Religious and Moral Education. We will continue to work closely with parents/carers in our community. We will take every opportunity to involve them in the life and work of our school. Opportunities are taken to plan collaboratively with colleagues, pupils and parents in keeping with our aim to be a learning community. Our learning and teaching will continue to be evaluated to ensure pupil needs are being met.
Article 29 of the UNCRC says that a child or young person’s education should help their mind, body and talents be the best they can be.
