Area 8

Welcome to Area 8 with Primary 6B and Mrs Brown

Term 3

Literacy

This term we are working on information reports and explanation texts in writing. We created a Success Criteria which helps us to remember everything we need to include in our writing to be successful. We have written about different Scottish Myths & Legends and famous Scottish scientist Sir Alexander Fleming. We are now focusing our writing on topics linked to the Human Body.

In reading we continue to develop our comprehension skills through our class novel and group novels. In class we are reading Wonder by RJ Palacio. We are really enjoying this novel as it deals with real life situations. We are hoping to watch the movie once we finish reading,

and compare the film to the book.

There has been an improvement in the weekly reading

homework, please continue to do this weekly at home and remember to write a few notes summarising what you have read in your reading record

Numeracy and Maths

In term 3 numeracy we are focusing on multiplication, division, fractions and money. We are developing our written and mental maths strategies to help us deal with more complex questions, including those with multiple steps. Everyone has been trying very hard and been open to more challenging work. In maths we have been developing our skills in telling the time and using timetables. Every week we will continue to practise our times tables, and we encourage extra practise at home with this too.

IDL

We are enjoying a science focus for IDL this term, all about The Human Body. We had a very exciting trip to the Surgeons Hall Museum in Edinburgh where we explored human body parts and the history of surgery through the years. We are learning about the different body systems and organ functions.

HWB

This term in PE we are doing Scottish Country Dancing which we will perform at the Scottish Ceilidh afternoon for visitors. We are also doing fitness and hockey. We are also developing our team work and sports skills with an Active Schools Co-ordinator every Wednesday, where we have an opportunity to explore a variety of different sports. In HWB we are learning about how to keep ourselves and others safe in emergency situations.

In term 1 and 2 our topic is The 1960s. We are exploring what life was like in the 60s and how it compares to life in 2023. We will look at fashion, technology, foods, politics, famous figures and more! We have been learning about Pop Art and famous artists, creating our own amazing art!

Literacy

In literacy we are reading ‘The Nowhere Emporium’ for our class novel and extending our comprehension skills through this. In writing, we have been learning how to write personal recounts and will be moving on to descriptive writing. We are trying to use a wide variety of openers in our writing and we are beginning to extend our use of descriptive phrases. We are all in a reading group and have a set day we read every week, with pages sent home to complete weekly.
