Ferryport Newsletter October 2026

Ferryport Nursery Newsletter October 2026

Well, that’s us almost at the end of the first term for our term time children, and what a quick term it has been! Our term time children will finish nursery on the 9th of October for the two weeks October break, returning on Monday 26th October. Our AM children will continue attending their nursery sessions as normal throughout the October holidays. Our AM children will receive the ‘Big Breakfast’ morning snack during the holidays rather than lunch.

Stay & Play Sessions – We will be offering four dates (8th, 9th, 26th and 28th October 2026), for parents to choose one, to come and spend a short time in nursery with their child. If need be siblings are welcome to attend along with their parents but will be the sole responsibility of their parents. Please see message on See Saw post, dated 2nd October 2026, for more information.

PEEP – We will shortly be commencing another block of PEEP sessions. Please look out for your invite which will be coming home with your child soon. This will contain more information about PEEP.

Book Bug – Our Book Bug sessions have been going well, and we hope everyone who has attended has enjoyed taking part. The final session in our current Book Bug block will take place on Friday 9th October. There will be more Book Bug blocks running throughout the year. Please keep an eye on future newsletters for upcoming dates and times. We look forward to welcoming more families to future sessions.

Tempest Photos – The Tempest photographer will be joining us on Monday 26th October to take individual photos of our children. Every child will have their photograph taken but you are under no obligation to purchase the photos. However, this maybe a nice idea for Christmas Presents!!

Learning Walls – Our Learning Wall celebrates children’s ideas, interests, achievements, and learning. It helps children reflect on their experiences and extend their learning interests.

Families are invited to contribute too! Please share photos, drawings, or stories from home that connect with our Learning Wall topics. Together, we can celebrate and extend children’s learning between home and nursery.

We’re excited to be starting a new Learning Wall soon. Keep an eye out to discover our next learning focus and see how the children’s interests, ideas, and experiences help shape our learning journey.

Beach Walks – We will be starting our beach walks on Tuesday 27th October. The children will be split into 2 groups with each group going to the beach alternate weeks starting with group 1. More information will be sent out via group call messages as to when your child will be going to the beach. On these days can we please ask that you make sure your child is appropriately dressed and has a waterproof suit and wellies available at nursery. Thank you.

Sickness/Illness – To help keep everyone healthy, we kindly ask that children who have experienced vomiting or diarrhoea remain at home for 48 hours after their last episode of illness before returning to nursery. As we move into the cough and cold season, please keep your child at home if they are feeling unwell or require medication such as Calpol to manage their symptoms. This helps to reduce the spread of infection and ensures that children are well enough to enjoy and fully participate in their nursery experience.

Thank you for your support in helping us keep our nursery community healthy and safe.

Winter Weather – Could all parents please ensure their child is appropriately dressed for the weather and that all clothing is clearly named. Thank you.

Childsmile – Louise from the Childsmile toothbrushing programme will be visiting nursery on Wed 28th October to speak to our children about toothbrushing and how to keep our teeth healthy.

Gate Safety – Can we please remind ALL parents/carers to please make sure they bolt the side gates (using the top bolts), when entering/leaving the nursery. Thank You.

Week Beginning 28th September 2026

Monday

Think Equal – This week we are continuing to explore the first book of the Think Equal programme  entitled Me, My self and I. This story encourages a positive sense of attitude, developing self worth and self esteem and recognises/values similarities/differences between themselves and others.  We have been exploring the ‘WOW’ words relating to this story which are Self, Same and Different. We have engaged in activities relating to the story including drawing a picture of ourselves on a jigsaw shaped piece of paper then collating all the jigsaw pieces to create one big picture. This symbolises that we all fit together to create a whole! If any person is missing from the puzzle it wouldn’t be complete showing we are all special parts of our groups.

Today some our children enjoyed exploring in the mud pit using descriptive language to describe the mud e.g.  “It’s sticky” “It’s squelchy” “It’s soft and runny”.  The sand was also explored by some children by experimenting with different resources develop our mark making skills.

Tuesday

Today we gathered together with SIMOA to discuss keeping safe during our community walk to the harbour.  We discussed how to keep ourselves safe – “By holding hands” “By stopping, looking and listening when crossing the road”. All children then listened to the Ziggy and the lollipop road safety story.                                                                   Some children enjoyed exploring a variety of autumnal themed natural resources at the art area before creating a variety of paintings and models.

Wednesday

Water play was popular with several children today. They experimented by pouring and filling  a variety of different shaped/sized vessels whilst also developing their measuring skills, sense of volume and exploring the force of  water when being poured etc.  The element of force was also being explored in our brick area by a few children during which they built a variety of different angled ramps to experiment how fast/slow the cars rolled down. Lots of mark making was explored by almost all children today on the new smart board creating lots of discussion/use of language to share their work/ideas with their peers.

Thursday

Today as part of our garden renovation/tidy some children helped dig up the rotten ‘balance’ logs which weren’t safe. Some of the other children helped sweep, and tidy other areas of the garden.  Almost all children demonstrated their turn taking skills whilst developing their gross motor skills on our climbing cubes. Some children used words of encouragement to those that were a bit unsure!

Friday

Today some children created a bus using an old unit. They experimented/explored different ways of making the bus move. They decided tying a rope to the end was the best way of moving the bus! “Can I get on your bus?” “How many people can get on?”
A few children helped the grown ups dig the big stones out the mud pit and through children’s voice almost all children voted on what they would like the new mud pit and mud kitchen  to look like! A few children represented/shared their ideas through role play in the dolls house developing language and turn taking skills. Some children enjoyed using a variety of media to mark make sharing their ideas with others developing their writing/mark making skills.
