Learning at Castlehill

Learning, Teaching and Assessment

At Castlehill, we set high expectations for all and promote
consistent practice across our school and wider community.

Our staff are committed to offering the highest quality learning
experiences, tailored to the needs of pupils through ongoing
assessment processes, providing regular opportunities for success.

Our practice is underpinned by our national Curriculum for Excellence and tailored to fit our local context within North East Fife through our Bell Baxter Cluster Learning, Teaching and Assessment Policy:

BBHS Cluster TLA Policy 22-23

This focus is narrowed further as we consider how we can use our school context to develop confident individuals, successful learners, effective contributors and responsible citizens. Our Curriculum Rationale( LINK/IMAGE*) outlines our ambition.

Relationships & Promoting Positive Behaviour

Children learn behaviours by watching, listening and talking to the adults who care for them. They develop their own morals and values from what they observe of how adults treat others. Staff have high standards of themselves, model positive behaviours and encourage these in others by ‘catching children being good.’

We understand that children need clear boundaries and consistent rules. You have high expectations of our children and are clear about what is acceptable and not.

In order for our children to learn about and manage different feelings and emotions, we use the ‘Emotion  Works’ resource(LINK*). This helps visualise and unpick behaviours to develop understanding, independence and responsibility.

Staff support pupil behaviour using restorative approaches.  This includes encouraging children to take responsibility for their behaviour and help them to learn how to resolve conflict.

Child Protection

The needs of our children are at the centre of what we do – to safeguard them from harm or at risk of being harmed.

We aim to:

  • Keep them safe.
  • Minimize their risk of harm.
  • Improve their wellbeing.
  • Build a positive, trusting relationship with the children, our families and community.

We believe that our values and aims are achieved when:

  • We create a calm, safe and happy learning environment.
  • We create a consistent approach where clear boundaries and expectations are established, understood and accepted throughout the school by all members of the learning community
  • All children and staff show and demonstrate a care and respect for each other.
  • Ensure children are listened to, loved and cared for in a way that makes them feel respected and nurtured.
  • There is a good understanding of needs and being responsive to them.
  • Each child is seen as an individual and encouraged to reach their full potential.
  • Parents and school are in partnership to help children and families who need support.
  • School and outside agencies, eg social work, are in partnership to help our most vulnerable families.
