Literacy
In literacy this term P4/5 are reading Wonder by R.J. Palacio. The novel tells the story of Auggie Pullman, a boy starting school for the first time after being home-schooled due to having undergone many facial surgeries.
Through this text, we will explore themes such as kindness, acceptance, friendship and resilience. Pupils will develop their reading and comprehension skills, take part in discussions and use the novel as a stimulus for writing and personal reflection.
Maths and Numeracy
This term in maths and numeracy P4/5 will cover fractions, data handling and chance and uncertainty. We’ll be using the World Cup as an exciting context for our learning, including tracking the progress of the different teams — especially Scotland — and using real match information to support our numeracy skills. Pupils will keep developing their number fluency through a range of practical activities, games, songs and online resources, helping them to consolidate key skills and strengthen their understanding of the four operations.
Learning Across the Curriculum
Our new IDL topic will explore the countries Scotland will play in the World Cup. Pupils will choose their own focus—this might be football traditions, famous players or cultural aspects such as food, music, art, dance, geography, landmarks or language. Pupil voice will guide the learning, with children encouraged to follow what interests them most. We will end the topic with a class celebration before Scotland’s first match, giving everyone a chance to share their learning about the different nations taking part in the FIFA World Cup 2026.
