Calaiswood School provides specialist education to meet the needs of children and young people, aged 3 to 18, who have complex and additional support needs.

The school opened in August 2007 following the closure of Headwell and Robert Henryson Schools.  The school is part of Duloch Community Campus which also houses Duloch Primary School, Nursery and a busy community centre.  The head teacher has responsibility for both schools and links are developing to promote campus working.  Children and young people work together when appropriate to share learning and develop social links.

We are privileged to be in a school which is designed around the needs of our pupils.  We have 11 classes ranging from nursery to secondary all with the highest quality facilities built in.  Other accommodation includes a pool with jacuzzi, a gym hall, homecraft room and art and music rooms with potential for full development of skills for life and skills for learning for all pupils.  Therapy offices and a nurses’ base are also incorporated into the build.

Our close proximity to Duloch Library, Tesco and Aldi enables us to access the local community for learning and teaching. We are committed to current initiatives on inclusion and have forged meaningful links with other education establishments, community groups and facilities.

A holistic approach is adopted at Calaiswood with therapy needs being integrated as well as a strong educational focus.

All parties’ work collaboratively to implement programmes and support pupils in achieving their individual targets. These are realised through a broad balanced curriculum within the National Framework for Curriculum for Excellence.  Multi-sensory and interactive methods ensure the curriculum is dynamic and meaningful for each pupil. The curriculum is at a level appropriate to the individual and we take part in ongoing development work to review our curriculum as appropriate.

Pupils in the senior school access SQA National level 1 or 2 courses as appropriate, where there is a particular focus on developing the skills they will need as they move on from school to adult learning.  Pupils who are not accessing SQA nationals have a PLP (Personal Learning Plan) with individualised targets which they work on throughout the school year.  These are shared termly with parents.

The staff : pupil ratio is high to enable full curriculum access and entitlement for all. Classes are staffed by a teacher and pupil support assistants. There are teachers of expressive arts, nurses and therapists.
