peacock

description about peacock. peacock are a type of large pheasant known for their beautiful colored feathers. Their tail feathers, also called coverts, make up more than 60 percent of the birds’ total body length, with only males having the colorful blue and green iridescent feathers. Females are smaller and have grey or brown feathers.

diet.They actively hunt insects like ants, crickets and termites; millipedes; and other arthropods and small mammals. Indian peafowl also eat small snakes. Domesticated peafowl may also eat bread and cracked grain such as oats and corn, cheese, cooked rice and sometimes cat food.

young. Peacock babies are called peachicks, though you won’t find any peachicks at Sacrewell as we only have male peacocks and no peahens.

habitat. Peacocks are ground-dwelling birds, eating insects, plants, fruit, seeds, ants, flies, snakes andamphibians. They live in forests, farmland, bushland and other warm regions with easy access to low trees. Even though peacocks are widely seen in many Asian countries, they are dominant in India, Sri Lanka and Myanmar.

anacondas

Description about anacondas. anacondas  are stocky, muscular snakes that are thicker than other boas. They have thick necks and narrow but large heads. All anacondas  have nostrils and eyes on the tops of their heads, which allow them to see above the water while remaining mostly submerged.

diet. It grabs its victim and pulls it underwater, drowning the prey. They typically feed on large rodents, tapirs, capybaras, deer, peccaries, fish, turtles, birds, sheep, dogs and aquatic reptiles.

young.  Baby snakes are  about 2 feet long when they are  born and are almost immediately able to swim and hunt.

habitat. of the Anacondas. The most common habitats for these reptiles are rivers meandering through tropical rainforest. They are native to streams, rivers, river basins, wetlands, marshes, and swamps.

Interesting fact about anacondas. The Green Anaconda is by far the heaviest snake in the world. This species name is Eunectes murinus. They can reach an amazing length of 29 feet (8.8 meters) or more which is slightly less than the longest snake in the world; the reticulated python. They can weigh as much as 550 lbs (227 kgs).

 

dik-diks

description about dik-diks. A dik-dik  is the name for any of four species of small antelope in the genus Madoqua that live in the bushlands of eastern and southern Africa. dik-diks  stand about 30–40 centimetres

diet. Dik-diks are herbivores. Their diet mainly consists of foliage, shoots,fruit  and,berries  but little or no grass. They receive sufficient amounts of water  from their food, which makes drinking unnecessary.

habitat. Habitat. Dik-diks live in shrulands  and savannas of eastern Africa. Dik-diks seek habitats with a plentiful supply of edible plants  such as shrubs. Dik-diks may live in places as varied as dense forest or open plain, but they require good cover and not too much tall grass.

Interesting fact about dik-diks. Fully grown, dik-diks  stand about 12-16 inches tall at the shoulders and weigh 7-15 pounds. 2. Their small size makes them easy pickings for a variety of predators. dik-diks are hunted by big cats, jackals, monitor lizards, hyenas, wild dogs, pythons, birds of prey, and humans.

chimpanzee

discription about chimpanzee . Individuals vary considerably in size and appearance, but  stand approximately 1–1.7 metres (3–5.5 feet) tall when erect and weigh about 32–60 kg (70–130 pounds) chimpanzees  are covered by a coat of brown or black hair, but their faces are bare except for a short white beard.

diet. Chimpanzees eat a wide variety of food. Scientists have recorded about 80 different items chimps eat, including seeds, fruit, leaves, bark, honey, flowers, and insects.

Young. The newborn weighs about 1.8 kg (about 4 pounds), is almost helpless, and clings to the fur of the mother’s belly as she moves.

habitat Chimpanzees are found in savanna woodlands, grassland-forest  mosaics and tropical moist forests , from sea level to about 3,000m in elevation. Chimpanzees are highly social animals.

Interesting faxct about chimpanzees. Humans and chimpanzees share 95 to 98 percent of the same DNA.

Gorilla

Description: Gorillas are one of the most evolved animals of all time acting like humans with fantastic communication skills.

diet: Gorillas stick to a mainly vegetarian diet, feeding on stems, bamboo shoots and fruits. Western lowland gorillas, however, also have an appetite for termites and ants, and break open termite nests to eat the larvae.

habitat:Gorillas typically live in the lowland tropical rainforests of Central Africa, although some are found in montane rainforest (between 1,500 and 3,500 meters) and in bamboo forest (between 2,500 to 3,000 meters).

intresting fact: A gorillas life span is between 35 – 40 years

Owl

Description about owl.  are birds from the order Strigiformes , which includes over 200 species of mostly solitary and nocturnal birds of prey typified by an upright stance, a large, broad head, binocular vision, binaural hearing, sharp talons, and feathers adapted for silent flight.

Diet.  Their diet includes invertebrates (such as insects, spiders, earthworms, snails and crabs), fish , reptiles, amphibians, birds and small mammals. The main food largely depends on the species of Owl. For example, Scops and Screech Owls feed on insects mostly, while Barn Owls eat mainly mice, shrews and voles.

Young. An owlet is a young  baby owl,typically a recently hatched bird that has not yet developed its full mature plumage and is still dependent on its parents for feeding, care, and security.

habitat. Different species of owl  hunt in different habitats , and have varied dietary requirements. Many will hunt in mature woodland, others lowland farmland and some upland moorland.

Interesting fact about owls. Most owls wake up as dusk falls. They hunt in the fading light, or even complete darkness. owls have round faces and huge eyes, which make them look oddly human. They need good hearing and eyesight to find prey in dim light.

 

Dart frogs

Description about Dart  frogs. Most species of poison dark frogs  are small, sometimes less than 1.5 cm (0.59 in) in adult length, although a few grow up to 6 cm (2.4 in) in length. They weigh 1 oz. on average. Most poison dart frog  are brightly colored, displaying aposematic patterns to warn potential predators.

Diet. In the wild, Blue Poison dart  Frogs eat  primarily insects, including caterpillars, ants, beetles, flies and mites. They will also consume spiders and other arthropods.

habitat. Poison dart frogs are endemic to humid, tropical environments of Central and South America. These frogs are generally found in tropical rainforests, including in Bolivia, Costa Rica, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Suriname, French Guiana, Peru, Panama, Guyana, Nicaragua, and Hawaii
