Can we all please celebrate and promote our final Family Songs at Home FC Campaign #Sway8

We have the wonderful:

• Where are the bees

Settings, please share with families and provide many opportunities, to promote children’s interests in the songs, rhymes and movement with “freedom and guidance” for outdoor singing and provocations in our holistic nurturing spaces to invite children to sing during play.

Can we also be very mindful of the importance of singing as a means to comfort our young children and this is something we can continue to do along with the abundance of benefits singing, rhymes and movement brings.

As this is our final Sway we would like to give a great big THANK YOU to everyone involved in process of the making this happen.

To YMI for creating wonderful musical videos and musical accompaniment, to Evelyn Anderson and Barbara-Anne Cleaver from SaLT Forth Valley for supporting with Makaton, to Jaclyn Connington music teacher from Falkirk High School, to Teresa Argent from Bowhouse ELC for helping us to learn the Makaton signs, to Lisa Boa Pedagogue at Bainsford Nursery for the lovely illustrations, to Helena MacPhail Pedagogue at Sacred Heart Nursery and to Donna Green, Falkirk’s Froebel Lead and Pedagogue for continuing to spread the Froebel philosophy and coordinating all of us to together.

And to all the #FabFalkirkFolk helping to spread the joy and benefits that singing, rhymes and movement brings to children and families.

We do plan to continue our collaboration to reconnect many of Froebel’s philosophy with our current modern-day practice through Songs, rhymes and movement, creating a resource that builds our knowledge and capacity of why we do what we do.

Froebel’s Mother Songs emphasis “connections within whole body, limbs, hands and fingers, transition into Movement Games for children who walk, talk and pretend” (Bruce, 2021, p: 73).

Family Songs at Home

As this blog evolves our aspiration is to share a range of Froebelian approaches to literacy which will include storytelling, rhymes and songs. Literacy can of course happen everywhere through our holistic approaches to Froebelian principled practice however, this platform will help us share specific projects and developments.

Currently we are working on a collaborative music project called “Family Songs at Home”

This is a Falkirk Froebel Network Project which has involved working in partnership with YMI, Speech and Language, Falkirk High School: Music Dep. Where we have been creating resources for practitioner* and family learning experiences to provide children with rich experiences which promotes singing rhymes and songs.

(*COVID guidance has restricted practice of singing in ELC settings)

  

Singing brings an abundance of benefits for babies and children, here are some:

 

Along with the above benefits we also know that when families sing together with their child/ren it creates many bonding and reciprocal opportunities that’s good for well-being. The Makaton signing and actions provide visuals which supports language and physical movement.

Team Falkirk as we welcome our children back are we ready to join in to help spread the joy and love of singing with our ELC families?  

You may already know we have a special friend called Dug eSgoil in Falkirk this week who loves music and singing.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

We hope our first song will bring smiles and joy: as our YMI tutors Laura and Cameron share “Sing a Rainbow” with two wonderful versions via a video and audio.

I wonder how many of us can do the Makaton signs?

Our second song will get arms, hands and fingers moving as Kirsty and Gareth our YMI tutors “Wind the bobbin up”.

 

Maybe we could say the words along with the Makaton signs at ELC, especially if we are outdoors and see a rainbow. At home we can encourage families to join in as we learn together in unity with children and families.

As we celebrate the great Robert Burns on 25^th January, we have added a wee Scottish rhyme “Wee Willie Winkie”.

“The Mulberry Bush” is our other song which is a popular seasonal song to get us all moving.

Christmas Family Songs at Home#

We know that singing is a valuable experience in ELC. Due to our current circumstances this won’t be happening as regularly as normal. Hence our mission to encourage our Falkirk families and children to sing at home! Some of our Falkirk Froebel Family have connected as a community of early years practitioners to produce songs, rhymes and music to share with our families through a sing at home campaign.

We have been supported from our wonderful colleagues at Speech and Language Therapy services, YMI and Falkirk High School music teachers to collaborate and produce a series of Sing at home sways.

Each sway will have a minimum of either two lullaby’s, rhymes or songs, with real instruments to accompany them, illustrations, along with Makaton signs for actions. Thank you to all of the fabulous #fabfalkirkfolk that helped make this happen.

We plan to create a series of 8 sways which will be shared over a period of time. Our first Sing at home sway is being launched on St Andrews Day 30th November 2020 hence the  Scottish song choices.

There is also the link to the Froebel Trust  pamphlet which explains the many benefits to songs rhymes and finger plays through a Froebelian perspective.

Helena MacPhail (EYP at Sacred Heart ELC) has been focusing on singing as part of her pedagogue project and her Froebel in Childhood Practice course. Helena has used different resources, including singing spoons, which have been a great success as provocations for sparking spontaneous singing with children.
