At Sgoil Shiaboist we are very fortunate to have a wonderful group of over 60’s who meet regularly and take time out of their days to work alongside our pupils.
Our pupils are lucky enough to have the opportunity to have both visitors to the school (pictured below is when we had some tuition for Shinty) & trips outwith the school grounds (below our 2026 Charlie Nicolson football team) to learn and take part in various events throughout the Island. Above is 1 of our P2 children, Josie who took part in the local colour run.

One very lucky boy had the most wonderful Christmas gift after being chosen by Rangers Football Club to be a mascot at their post Christmas match in 2025! Lewis loved every minute!

From September to November we had 4 staff teams walking the length of the Caribbean battling against each other! The Shufflers came out top and each won a gift voucher from the NHS! Our janitor (Murdo) came out on top (1st place) in a challenge of over 300 participants! Go Jani!!

We have a dedicated group of Parents who solely work on Fundraising for School funds, along with the Pupils and staff creating events to raise funds also.
In December 2025 we had a “Breakfast with Santa” morning which was well attended and certainly put everyone in the Christmas spirit!

The pupils and staff put on Coffee afternoon in March 2026 to raise funding for the School trip taking place to the mainland in June, where they raised over £500!
As part of the fundraising calendar the Parent Council have a sub committee consisting of parents who concentrate on raising funds for the children to benefit from experiences outwith the school environment.
One of the many fundraising events was the Community Clean-up which took place on a cold and wet Saturday in March!

Siuthad! is the primary seven transition programme funded and delivered by Urras Oighreachd Ghabhsainn (Galson Estate Trust), Urras Oighreachd Chàrlabhaigh (Carloway Estate Trust) and Urras Oighreachd Bharabhais (Barvas Estate Trust), and sees pupils from Sgoil an Taobh Siar, Lionel, Shawbost and Breasclete primary schools explore the outdoors, discover new areas and activities, and learn how to protect and conserve our environment, with the help of some local experts.
The three-day programme involves a variety of exciting outdoor activities in Shader, Arnol and Barvas, including mountain biking, canoeing, learning survival skills in a woodland session, a trip to a fank for a crofting session, loch walks, cleaning up our beaches and going back in time with a visit to Arnol Blackhouse.
Urras Oighreachd Ghabhsainn and Urras Oighreachd Chàrlabhaigh started the transition programme in 2020, originally in partnership with the John Muir Trust, to ensure that the primary seven pupils from the four schools had a chance to meet one another before going to the Nicolson Institute, as well as learning about the area they come from and acquiring new skills. The programme is now running under the new independent banner of Siuthad! meaning go on in Gaelic.
We are grateful to all partners and local experts for their support in putting on an unforgettable experience for these young people; Chris Barrowman, Simon Amos, Historic Environment Scotland, Stornoway Canoe Club, Horshader Community Development, Galson Motors, Scaladale Centre, Harris Tweed Hebrides, Hebridean Minibus and Ionad na Seann Sgoil.
