Higher Philosophy

Higher Philosophy is offered as an option to S6 students and is a popular subject with a large uptake. A Philosophy qualification is looked on favourably by Universities and colleges as evidence of developing higher order thinking skills.

As part of the course students will have the opportunity to explore the following areas:

Arguments in Action – This involves developing skills and abilities in critical thinking and logic.

Knowledge and Doubt – Students learn about the philosophical subject of epistemology that considers what knowledge is and whether we can ever actually have definite knowledge.  The philosophers Rene Descartes and David Hume are studied.

Moral Philosophy – Students learn about the competing ideas of Utilitarianism and Kantian Ethics as to how to determine the correct moral action in any given situation.
