Fairy Doors and Stone Painting

Are there any fairies living in woods near you?
Mrs MacLeod has noticed a few fairy doors in the woods near her house.
You could paint your own designs on stones or an old roof slate if you have any.
Mrs Hampton has been painting different insects and birds on stones at home too.

Who do you think lives behind these doors?

Here are
Mrs Hampton’s lovely painted stones.  What birds and insects can you see and paint?

If you go down to the woods today… look out for bluebells as well as fairies. They are starting to grow…

Fun ideas from Mrs Reynolds!

Hello everyone,
Hope you are finding lots of ways to have fun at home and in this lovely sunshine! Mrs Reynolds has shared some photos of great ideas she has been using with Erin at home:
TRANSIENT ART
An old cutlery tray filled with interesting objects like stones and cones and an old picture frame can be used outside to create many different patterns and pictures.

Below are some examples of outdoor Transient Art by the British environmental artist Andy Goldworthy. You might get  some ideas from him…

DIFFERENT WAYS WITH A PADDLING POOL
1) Use it as a Wee Den to draw and read in

2) Erin’s Daddy’s birthday balloons were collected to make a place for dolls and teddies to have a party
3) RHYME FISHING:
Another idea is Rhyme Fishing in a paddling pool, an old baby bath or a washing up bowl. Fill it with water and throw in some rhyming objects (e.g. cork -fork; key-pea; petal-metal), then challenge your child to fish out the objects that rhyme using a ladle or other utensil. For an extra challenge you could work on a way to make your own fishing net…

We are Poets, and We Know It!

The children have been enjoying exploring rhyme through  fabulous books like “Oi Frog” & “You Can’t Let an Elephant…”,  alongside Rhyme bags, Story props and Rhyme Fishing in the Water Tray. They have taken great delight in generating their own rhymes, inspired by the books, and have come up with some great rhyming lines!
“Miss MacFarlane sits on a darling.”(EK)
“A rocket sits on a docket”(EH)
“A giraffe sits on a path.” (NN)
“Never let a bee come to tea.” (IMM)
“Don’t give a scare to a bear!” (EP)
“Don’t give a coat to a goat.” (MN)
“Don’t let a bear sit on your chair… or your hair” (FD)
“Don’t let a bunny eat your money.” (EC)
“That’s not a song because it’s just words. A poem is a thing that rhymes.” (HN)

“Honey… and money.”

“Pig rhymes with wig!”
“The wig is too… BIG!”

“Goat goes in a….boat.”

Fishing for Rhyming Objects in the Water Tray. “Egg rhymes with peg!”

“Tree rhymes with me.”

“What rhymes with petal? That is made of metal!” “And it rhymes with Gretel… and kettle!”

Space

We were listening to the story “Little Moon”   about a moon that was lost in space.

After reading the story we drew pictures of our own planets and helped little moon to travel around the solar system to find his home, Earth.

We love singing along to the planets song and learning lots of cool facts!

The children worked together to create the surface of the moon. Lots of gluing, cutting and sticking to develop our fine motor skills.

We also made some rockets and astronauts for our tuff tray.

Our finished product! We enjoyed using our moon for role play and story telling.

Imagine that…

The nursery children have been busy in imaginary worlds of dinosaurs, fairies and robots:
“Look, come and see – someone lives behind this door…. It’s a spider!”
“Tinkerbell lives there.”
“Look, I found these magic beans. If I plant them they will grow into a beanstalk.”
“The dinosaurs can make footprints in the sand.”
“That one’s triceratops, that’s tyrannosaurus.”
“We need to make buttons for the robot.”

Two old bin boxes become great “robots”.

“Dinosaurs eat meat. Some live in the water, some can fly.”

Spicing it Up

This week the children spent a long time experimenting in our
Spices Kitchen – smelling, mixing, pouring and describing as they made some very interesting potions, recipes and concoctions…

Some comments from our Young Cooks & Scientists:
“We’re mixing a new potion. Come on, let’s see what colour it makes. Potion No.1 & Potion No.2…”
“What happens when you put this in?… It’s turning yellow… now it’s turned orange.”
“How about this? This is going to be the spiciest one ever!”
“Smell ours, it’s the tastiest.”
“Now we’ve made soup…. and spicy potatoes. They smell yummy!”
“Smell the rosemary. I like that.”
“Look at our porridge. Let’s smell it. I like to put cinnamon in my porridge.”
“They turn squooshy in the water (oats)…
not crunchy.”

If anyone in the family has old/out-of-date spices not needed, please feel free to donate them for further experiments!
